Windows Media Player visual problem

    Alright, when my computer got screwed up, rebooted, and basically erased everything, Windows Media Player got messed up. At first, I couldn't hear anything, so I downloaded a codec for it, which made the audio work. Now I can't see anything, but I can hear stuff. I looked online for a solution, but nothing came up. So, I reinstalled it, and it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

    Sounds more like you're trying to view divx or other files on it without having the proper codecs installed. Google for ffdshow and install it. And I'd suggest BSplayer over WMP.

    If you're connected to the internet and have set up things properly, Media Player should automatically download the codecs it requires.

    You could simply download the "official" DivX codecs, and either use the player that comes with them, or just use the codecs with Media Player. Or you could follow Tal's advice and not use Media Player at all :)

    Ziad, although that is what's supposed to happen, somehow, when I don't have the necessary codec(s) installed, WMP never was able to find them, even though they existed, as I proved by finding and downloading them myself manually. The WMP codec library is far from complete.

    IIRC, this is especially a problem with xvid. WMP never found it by itself in my case some time ago.

    Alright, I installed BSplayer, but the video still doesn't play. Could this be a problem with some hardware I have?

    Yes, I installed it, and now it works. However, BSplayer is reeeally dark. Everything looks fine on Windows Media Player, but I can barely see anything with Bsplayer.

    Strange... might happen if you try to run both programs at once. You can modify ffdhshow picture output settings either in BSplayer settings or via ffdshow directly.

    Alright, its happened again. I have ffdshow installed, so I tried uninstalling it, and reinstalling it. However, two of he files in ffdshow will not be deleted: ffdshow.ax and msvcr80.dll

    And when I try to reinstall, it has a problem with those two files. What should I do? I can't see anything in Windows Media Player (or BSplayer), and I can't erase the two files that might make it work... any help?

    It can't just suddenly stop working for no reason. Is that what you're saying happened? You didn't install any new codecs or made any changes and it suddenly wouldn't play movies it has played before?

    Do you have any ideas of how to erase those two files I mentioned? I think those might be the problem, because whenever I try to reinstall it, it has trouble with those two. Is there something I can do to erase them?

    Booting up in safe mode might also release the restriction.

    Hmmm, I converted one of the files to MPEG-4, and it worked. However, this is the only type of file that it works with... I'm going to try the Unlocker and uninstall it, then see if it works for all of them.
