I'm sure that we have safety problems related to food here in the USA (a little known plus with my home town is that city health inspectors put their reports online so people can check out how grocers and restaurants-just for those inside the city-do).

I've lucky enough to visit a decent number of countries-at least for an American.

But I think there are several that are worse off food safety wise.

This is also why it is a good thing to have nation of origin labeling on food products.

If we deregulate most everything, as some would like, we would be like China, in more ways than one. How ironic is it that those who favor drastic deregulation, would be more than likely those who despised most everything about China just a few, short years ago?

Just crossed China off my list of possible holiday destinations...unless I can take a pack-lunch!

Considering all the other stuff they eat over there, THIS shouldn't really surprise anyone.

Of if you're to travel to the Philippines.. just google "Balot". If you dare.

One of my colleagues actually dared to try that once in the Philippines. He tried to get me to try it, obviously to no avail. There ARE nicer things to eat there :D .

Yeah, Philippines cuisine is actually a lot more appetizing (generally) than THAT. It's just one of those "okay, we're going to get visitors from abroad, what are we going to serve?" "I know, let's see if they stomach THIS... (tee hee muhahahaah)" things.

And yes, I would know, my wife is from there. All my extra ~10 kg gained after I met her are proof enough, methinks. :p

Some of those processes are pretty gross. I would wonder what I was eating myself if I lived in china. Talk about wanting your own garden!

That Balut looks nasty, but for some reason, I think I would try it.

The smell of the balut is the killer ... after you bite into it. They used to have these little stands in Olongapo that had "meat-on-a-stick". We never knew what the meat was and were too drunk to care. Everyone honestly thought it was monkey meat that was grilled on the stick.

I'm pretty sure I've eaten dog and cat as well (not to mention gator, turtle, duck, goose, deer, bear, buffalo, rattlesnake, snails, and ants).

As far as the article is concerned ... no big deal ... haven't any of you worked in the food industry? You would not believe what goes on in the back room of a McDonald's.

Pfft, dog and cat. I'm sure I've eaten those, rat, donkey, and I suppose anything else that walks on two or four legs in Bulgaria - I've eaten meat products in the 90s, after all :p .

I grew up with SPAM. My father loved it. That and Smoked Butt w/ cabbage(Basically Pig ASS!). YUCK! I actually use SPAM as a way of getting my 3 yr old to eat her dinner. We have a can in the house and I tell her I will cook it and make her eat it if she doesn't eat her veggies. Even 3 yr olds know that SPAM is nasty!

Actually, pork butt is a bit of a misnomer. It's the upper part of the shoulder, not on the "ass-end" which would be the leg or ham.

We used to get spam fritters at school. They would swim in about half a pint of grease

I don't quite get why it'd be so much different whether a juicy steak on my plate is made of pork, beef or, say, a cat. Sure, not many people raise cats for the sole purpose of turning them into meaowy burgers and the quality control of random cat meat isn't quite possibly as developed as more traditional livestock industry, but it's still meat. And, just a wild guess, it probably tastes just like chicken.
