I am surprised nobody has mentioned the most irritating thing yet...'lose' and 'loose'.
People use 'loose' all the time when they want to say 'lose'. I have even seen it appear in a pc game text!. They even go as far as to type 'looser' instead of 'loser'. (What is a 'looser' by the way? A guy that sets things loose?)

I never got a spelling error because loose is spelled correctly. I gota think about this. I never even think what I write anyway so sometimes I write lose and sometimes loose. I doesn't matter really we all know what we're talking about.

 

Pfff, I say we just switch to Latin. In latin, there are no indefinite articles, definite articles are barely used, and word order doesn't matter.

Kinda confusing, but it's still great to be in a class about grammar and have the TA say "Eh...whatever you want, it really doesn't matter."

 

No! Latin is dreadful. Especially the Aeneid. I have bad memories of that.

 

NO! Lets all switch to Latin, I know a wee bit of it...

There are alot of problems in English, but atleast we can allways ditch it and change to Latin, noone would really care...

me vs I

I am guilty of this one occasionally. My grandmother has corrected me before... but none of my english teachers ever did. It sounds wierd to me for some reason, but it's definately "She came to visit Bill and me", not "She came to visit Bill and I".

What ever happened to "whom"? Is this even taught in schools anymore?

 

Whom have Bill and I come to me? The wit-picker?

Who makes the list of general mistakes?

Hehe, I hope that "alot" was deliberate.

Another of my pet-hates is "come" vs "came". It seems to be particularly bad in the city I grew up in (Townsville), but I sometimes hear it used here, too. "Yeah, I come 'round the corner, and he poked me right in the eye!". Has anyone here heard this one outside Australia?

Yes, yes, and yes! My pet peeve is folks saying, "Where is it at?" No 'at' is required! "Where is it?" will do quite nicely, thank you!

I almost never post about such things, because I am always afraid I will sound like an ass and be flamed out of existence, but since this is what the thread is all about, I couldn't resist. Though I am probably unwise to post so late at night, as I am bound to make errors...

BTW, the word 'were' can also be used in an unreal conditional sense (also known as the subjunctive voice, I believe), as in the following sentence. "If I were a werewolf, you wouldn't like me very much."

 

I hate butchery of archaic english, such as:

"Thee art a proud gentleman."

AAARGH! Evil!

 

It was deliberate actually, I am wise enough to know that there needs to be a space between 'a' and 'lot'.

 

My english teacher sux.
She says that we have to write like "it is" instead if it's and "should not" instead of shouldn't aso. She says we aren't good enough to start with that yet. "You will learn that when you start college. As long as you are in my class you will spell the way I want you to or you won't pass."
ARGH! She makes me furious!

 

Eil, you seem to speak perfect English, what are you doing in a class like that? Can all the other kids barley speak it or something?...

Yes; a lot of people these days try to use thee, thou, thy, thine etc. to make language sound authentic and medieval, but just end up proving their ignorance (now hopefully I won't prove mine ).
thou - subject. Thou art great and mighty.
thee - object. I would serve thee.
thy - possessive with object. Lend me thy favour.
thine - possessive without object. I will be thine forever.
