I know lots of people who have a mirror above or next to their kitchen sink (for washing faces and such). Just because many people weren't raised this way doesn't mean it's animalistic or wrong. Comparing it to second hand smoke isn't really applicable... you're not harming someone by spitting in the sink and washing it out. Unless by that logic having any kind of uncooked meat in the sink for any reason is just as harmful, if not more, than second hand smoke.

I've brushed my teeth over the sink a few times, (when you only have one bathroom, and a full house, it's not always applicable to wait an hour or two for the women to take showers and then brush your teeth), but I do prefer to use the bathroom, because that is how I was raised. If I were raised brushing my teeth over the sink, then that is probably how I would prefer to do it. I'm not sure where the repulsion comes from: is it the conditioned response of 'spit is icky'?

On the bright side, at least he isn't a chewer. That would be some really nasty spit.

 

By that logic homosexuality should be disallowed because it is annoying and repulsive to some people. I don't brush my teeth over the sink, and doing so isn't repulsive or disgusting to me. I don't like to watch people brush their teeth wherever they do it, and if they're brushing their teeth in the sink I'd just look away; if I had to use the sink, I'd wait the 2 minutes it'd take just like if they were washing a pan.

Some things people should just 'let go.' I'm fairly sure this man and woman couple who brush their teeth over the sink don't do it to spite Mordea. Unless they secretly do so and then cackle behind his back, "Haha, did you see his face while we were brushing our teeth? Priceless!"

Yes, spit carries germs. Breath carries germs too. So can physical contact. Touching doorknobs, faucets, etc. Spit is no worse than other things people would put into a sink; raw meat is potentially deadly, most likely more than any common ailment you would gain from even drinking someone's spittle. (Vile concept, but true.) If you prep all of your food in the sink with no strainer or pot or for some reason are in a position to admit those germs from the sink to your body, then I can understand why you would be upset. But people that I know do not do that (because of other things in the sink; dirty dishes and old drinks, grease, and other fluids poured into the sink for disposal), perhaps this is a cultural difference. Like the odd looks you'd get in the US if you tell someone you use a bidet. ("Why would you need to do that? Mudflap ewww!") Even though they're mostly unfounded.

 

I really can't see that this could be an issue. In my experience kitchen sinks are way filthier than toilet sinks.

Haha; indeed, the comparison was extreme. I was definitely not suggesting people can stop being gay at all; and surely not as easily as brushing their teeth in a different location.

 

I have brushed my teeth in the kitchen sink. I don't consider it any dirtier or cleaner then any other sink. Although, I'm pretty sure the only reasons I've ever done so were either because someone fouled the bathroom so badly I thought I would die if I brushed in there or because I was watching baby Snook eat breakfast while I was getting ready for work.

 

It sounds like the couple is making sure everyone gets an extra dose of germs just in case.

Which, considering that human immunity system left to its own devices pretty much WILL find something else to do -- allergies in particular -- isn't all that bad idea.

Rather than comment their behaviour, embrace it and join them!

(Actually I'm at least half-serious here.)

 

Raw pork, chicken, fish, shrimp, and the salival (and possibly pulminary) contributions of your entire household already go into the sink. At least a few of those are much worse than someone's spit. If you're ok with people putting raw chicken in the kitchen sink, I don't think I can take the sanitary arguement seriously.

 

Or start brushing your teeth in the toilet and see how they react to that.

 

From a bacteria standpoint, this just isn't that big a deal. Despite the fact that we **** in our toilets, despite the fact that wash our hands in our bathroom sinks after using our toilets, and despite the fact that we also brush our teeth in the bathroom sink, the kitchen sink still has a higher level of bacteria than either the toilet or the bathroom sink. If you are disgusted by the practice of brushing ones teeth in the kitchen, that's fine, but don't wrap that argument up in hygienics. If you find the behavior disgusting, your offense is cultural rather than empirical, since what we already do to our kitchen sinks is worse from the standpoint of bacteria accumulation.

I've brushed my teeth in the kitchen sink once or twice, when I was running late and someone was in the bathroom. Nobody has been killed as a result, so I think I got away with it.

 

Fascinating topic. I don't consider my kitchen sink to be a hygienic place to put food. I'm trying to envisage what Taluntain is doing with his food in the sink as it is clearly different to what I use the sink for. Interesting.
