    The main problem was that it was really really shallow (only 5km from the surface), which magnifies the force felt at the surface. The 7 magnitude one was 33km from the surface so way more "muffled" so to speak. You've only got look at the twisted ground and shattered hillsides with boulders strewn everywhere to see that this was little to do with building standards. The Richter magnitude is only part of the picture.

    If anyone is interested, the government has just launched a fund-raising appeal to help the victims.

    The fund is administered by one of our biggest banks on behalf of the Department of Internal Affairs.
