[IMG] Ok, this might come as a surprise, but I think my favorite characters are the halflings.

And not 'cause they're cute little furry pseudo-British guys, either.

It seems that the best fantasy books add something new to the genre. FR added the drow and the kender. But I don't think anyone's ever come up with something that felt as complete and as "right" as halflings. Even in a world full of dour dwarves, mystical elves, and mad scientist gnomes, the halflings carved out their own niche with personality and culture.

If you can think of a race that will do the same, then write a book, darn you! I'm waiting for something good to come out!

For PC races, it's a toss up for me: either halflings or gnomes. Both are just so much more unique than the other races IMO. Elves are always just a little too stuck up and full of themselves (everyone writes about elves). Dwarves are fun, but often limited. A dwarf with a hammer or an axe - has a beard - quaffs beer - likes gold ("Gold, gold, gold, gold, gold") etc, etc. Halflings and gnomes are just more, well, unique than the others. They're interesting, and not one-dimensional.

As for creatures in general, maybe a cop-out, but dragons are simply the coolest. They're just so versatile. You can fit a dragon into almost any campaign in virtually any role: guardian, quest-giver, companion, 'riddler', disguised NPC, opponent, interesting and unrelated encounter. The list is endless.

Although, I'd like to see more done with giants. I really think they're an under-utilised creature. They so often get relegated to a 'brute-force' encounter, when there are so many other possibilities...even the dumb ones :)

Tarrasque is not as dangerous as old dragons??? Hmmph. Maybe I'm wrong, as it's been awhile since I've seen 3E MM, but it's my understanding that the tarrasque is by far the toughest single monster you could put your party up against. I'm curious (haven't got the chance to run math yet) as to how many level 20 characters it would take to beat the tarrasque....

According to the 3E MM, all Great Wyrms and Titans are more difficult/challenging than the Tarrasque (based on CR). Actually, any ancient Copper, Bronze, Red, Silver or Gold is 'tougher'. I've never really liked the idea of the Tarrasque myself. It's just too 'godzilla-like' -- the only thing missing would be a match-up with Mothra ;)

The reason the terrasque has only a 20 is that it's dumb as a post. Dragons possess almost god-like intelligence and can cast many spells. Plus they have their very powerful breath weapons. In a game I was DMing the party was fighting a young adult dragon. The fight was going well for them, and the dragon began to flee from it's lair. Suddenly it turned around and used it's breath weapon, torching half the party. That breath weapon counts for a lot.

Heh. My favorite would be a higher-level Solar, or a Solar on its home plane.

I'm with you, in regards to the Centaurs. Really cool creatures. I have to say, though, I much prefer goblins to kobolds. Not sure why, I just love sending my players against stronger and stronger goblin opponents.

Good to know that I'm not the only fan of the small barking buggers.
