Sometimes it's for your own good, what people say.

Some people just play far too many computer games, or engross themselves in too much (pseudo)"intellectual" activities. Honestly now, when was the last time you took a walk, and stopped to admire the beauty of some flowers or a pond (no, not roleplaying as your 8th-level druid)? Or played a game of basketball with your friends. It can be every bit as worthwhile as sitting in front of a computer.

But, hey, if you are a nerd (and we all are, indubitably), be proud of who you are. :D

    Oaz is precisely on point.

Anything can be good, in moderation.

Too much of anything is ... just not good for you.

D&D and such is no different on both points.

I don't, because no one knows what it is. Also, wargaming is getting more popular here, so it would be hypocritical in the extreme for them to say anything.

Nope, when I'm with non-gamer friends (actually that's about all of them, pitty me ;) ) I hardly ever mention fantasy stuff and RPGs.

Still they are aware I know more about computers than the average girl, and they don't seem to mind.

I used to be the antisocial nerd they all talked about behind the back, but I've changed quite a bit and I haven't encountered any problems ever since. Also gaming is just becoming much more mainstream, at least over here it is, which makes it easier too.

Aye, got hte impression that people are treating me the same. That's a good thing.

Some friends don't understand why I like D&D. My answer is that I don't understand why they like their girlfriend or job, or that they lack fantasy or a creative brain.

Most of my friends are either in my AD&D-group or they want to be, so no real problem there :D
I've never heard anyone call me a nerd to my face, but I'm 1,97m and 110 kg, so they may try if they dare :D :D :D
They may have thought it, but mind-reading is not yet one of my capablilities...

Morningstar, with the band mates I have, it would be ... well ... basically, if you don't share the same interest with them, they'll poke fun at you. After a while it can be quite annoying. I mean ... can't people just grow up or something!

The ended up committing me to a psych ward because of my liking of all things geeky. How's that for morons?

So what if I used to be a violent and nasty piece of work? They blamed me for being "too involved"... ha. I was only babbling about stuff all the time because finally someone actually LISTENED to what IU had to say :/

I am actually called a geek even by my dear happy RPG/LARP friends as well. Apparently, I am thee "supreme Tolkiien geek" of OIEI....

    Yep, I ramble. Sorry.

I've been called weird for my entire life. Only two years ago did I meet the first person in my life to think me normal. Obviously I wasn't normal enough as our ties were cut in less than 6 months.

I've always taken it as a compliment though, even if I did feel a bit sad about it at times. Nowadays I feel it only gives me strength to show people what I am. At least it makes short work of the shallow pretenders that I've no need for in my life anyway.

I must admit I am guilty my self of calling a D&D player a nerd :o not to his face of course though.

But no, I haven't been called a nerd for d&D or CRPGing before. Mainly because most people don't know that I do those things and even if they did would have no idea what they are.
I have of course been called a nerd, on frequent occasions, but usually I just smile and agree. No point arguing with them, and anyway, it's true.

I'm really weird anyway, playing D&D is common here, i look like i would want to crush someone's neck all the time, and i have a history as a violent person (through rumors)...

Nope, no-one even calls me a nerd.
    Though everyone calls me weird.

To me it's a case of moderation -- for instance, I like Star Wars, but my friend who has the first three movies all memorized, his house looks like a shrine of some sort with all sorts of memorabilia, and he talks about it ALL THE TIME! It's annoying. THAT'S nerdy and lame, if you ask me. But reading stuff or playing a game occasionally is not problematic. I know about problematic gaming, though -- I played WAY too much BG2 and that is one of the factors that cost me my marriage.

Yeah, I used to get paid out all the time for reading comics as well as playing the Hero Quest and Space Crusade board games and now I get it for playing BG2. I don't care though, not anymore. I'm actually quite proud of my extensive collection of Marvel comics (we don't get a lot of variety here in my little hole of a 'city'). Hey, I've even been paid out for reading Fantasy books!
