    You forgot the Vikings - the term "Viking" is actually "raider" or, "to go raiding." Despite the fact that there were few Normans in England, they held the levers of power and changed Anglo-Saxon society a great deal. French was spoken in the English Court until the time of Edward III. The Hundred Years War created the rise of English nationalsim (not in a modern sense) but transformed the Norman Court into something different - which was English (this is about the time of Chaucer (the Canterbury Tales), which means that they were speaking and writing in Middle English.

    The "golden age" of Anglo-Saxon society is really something different and centers around King Alfred, the Great, and the resistance to the Viking invaders, and helped to create a stronger sense of "Englishness" in the population, which is still felt today. The novel _Ivanhoe_, although the setting is the time of King Richard (the Lionheart) illustrates quite well the tension between the Anglo-Saxons and Norman rulers, who were seen as usurpers by many in the native population. The odd thing is that King Richard I really thought of himself as a Frenchman, not an Englishman.
