Dragon Age: Origins - The Baldur's Gate Successor?

Ive been playing RPG D&D games since they started. I have always played on the computer but with Dragon Age I am on the Xbox. Much harder with the controls than with a mouse. Im just glad to have a new RPG D&D game!!! I like BG the best.

 

Grammy, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but DA is not D&D. It most certainly is an RPG, but whole point behind Bioware creating this new IP was to get away from all the baggage that comes along with using the D&D license. Of course, this should not affect your enjoyment of the game any! I'm just pointing out a technicality.

 

DA:O kept my attention for about 20 minutes. Calling it a spiritual successor to something as amazing as BG was shameful.

 

"About 20 minutes" isn't a lot of time to experience the game. You would have still been in your origin story, which is a prologue, not the meat of the game. What did you find so distasteful that you gave it only 20 minutes of your attention? Perhaps you should give it another try?

 

I watched my friend play outside the story mode, I wasn't interested. The main plot seems about as bland as Oblivion.

I also very much dislike dying at the end of a game. On an off note, I really want to play Alpha Protocol .

 

Let me get this straight:

-you didn't play the game yourself, you only watched your friend play (presumably for 20 minutes).

-I'm not sure I know what you mean by "outside the story mode" but it seems that what you saw bear little relevance to the story and yet you deem that it is enough to compare the main plot of DAO to Oblivion.

-you haven't played the game but you've managed to post a spoiler about one of the possible endings (yes I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that but it's just one ending among many).

 

I say yes and here is why.

1) BG2 was known for its banter between party members and that if you changed party members you would have new banter. The same holds true for DAO.

2) Replay value - we all loved replaying BG2 because there were so many class options to play the game through. In DAO instead of replaying the game due to all the class options, DAO has replay value because there are 6 origins to play through and even changing the PC sex has an impact on replay value for some origins.

3) Time invested to beat the game. I don't remember how long it took me to beat BG2:Shadow of Amn, but I know in today's CRPG 40-50 hours of gaming is quite a bit.

4) Test of time - The BG2 stands the test of time and I have a gut feeling so will DAO.

I completely agree with Bioware that DAO is the spiritual sucessor to BG2. Is it what all BG2 player envisioned? No. Does it meet the requirements to be the spiritual sucessor, I believe so.

I swear that some BG2 fans will not give a game like DAO a chance because they put BG2 on a petalstool and claim it is the god of CRPG. It is only a video game and it has many flaws that quite a few overlook because they are use to those flaws; however, whenever a new CRPG is released with any form of flaw they, the BG2 fans, put down the game before truly giving it a chance and allowing the game to shine for what it is.

If you give DAO a chance and play through you can see Bioware did a great job with the game. It is the closest game I have played that can be claimed as the Spiritual Sucessor to BG2.

On a side note; I played BG2 from beginning to end twice. I have played DAO from beginning to end 3 times and I'm currently working on my forth play through. To me DAO succeeds BG2.
