    Hmmm...

    I just looked at the configuration options for an HP laptop that I've been considering, and while they still offer HD-DVD drives, they are priced at 50% off. I don't know why they even bother offering a defunct technology...do they expect that people will still buy these drives even though BD won? :hmm: :rolling:

    They still have a lot of HD-DVD drives they want to get rid of, and they figure that some people have HD-DVD disks they want to use, or that not everyone has found out Blu-Ray won. Trying to sell somd drives and getting 50% for some of them is better than throwing all their drives on the junkpile.

    Looking back two years ago almost, I realize that BR was the right choice. I purchased a PS3 knowing the advantages and disadvantages of both formats and had a good feeling HD-DVD would loose format battle to BR because at the time one of the cheapest unit for HD Movies was the PS3. In fact, most of the people I talked in late 2006 purchased PS3 as their blu-ray player vs. a stand alone unit for over a grand.

    At Walmart you can now pick up a BR player four a little over $250.

    What I disliked about most HD-DVD players is that they were actual setup to display a 720p or up scale to 1080i image, not 1080p like a BR player. Owning a 1080p TV that didn't sit well with me. The same holds true for the Xbox 360. That is why I purchased the PS3. The games are 720p or 1080p and you can disable the 1080i upscale if you wish, which is what I did. All of my BR moves, I own more than dozen, look and sound so much better than their DVD counter parts. I only buy BR that are $20 or less and I like do to a compare and contrast as much as possible.

    I would say that the improvement in sound is what really hit me. Uncompressed or lossless 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 sound on BR is simply a lot better than the heavily compressed counterpart on DVD. Of course you need to have the necessary equipment to take advantage of it. And not to forget the picture quality, which is also great.

    There were always far better storage mediums in terms of capacity around... the real problem was invariably just their mass production price and the gargantuan expense of making them a standard. So I wouldn't expect any major changes at least for the next 10 years now that the world has adopted BD and there are so many BD-capable players in the hands of the consumers.

    Do comsumers want to put so much of their data on a flimsy disk? Are our movies and other stuff not far better protected on a HDD?

    I think that the blu ray is the last disk.

    I agree with that assessment.

    By year's end, SanDisk will be shipping a 32GB SD-Micro card. That's only 18GB away from a DL-BD disk...all on a card that's smaller than my thumbnail.

    Give flash memory technology 5-10 more years, and it will have progressed to the point where they can make a 500GB-1TB+ memory card the size of today's SD card for cheap. I wouldn't mind having every movie we own on ROM cards the size of a postage stamp. Maybe by then our TV's will be Ultra High Definition (7680 × 4320) :bigeyes:
