Hmm, that sounds like it could be it but ...

I wouldn't say that Penny was particularly vain - she was intelligent, self confident and she always managed to save Inspector Gadget's butt, yet she always let him take the credit.

Also, I can't remember Dr. Claw ever actually doing anything professor worthy. He pretty much restricted himself to sitting in his chair and threatening others to get them to carry out his schemes.

Yeah, it was a shot in the dark. I didn't think Penny was vain at all either - she was fit though. But only when you were 10, I should add! :hahaerr:

And Brain was superb. All hail the legend that is Frank Welker!

You've never done lab work, have you JSBB? :shake:

Most of the professors I have dealt with do their own research, although that is mostly in an academic environment and not in a commerical setting.

Regardless, I still say that to be worthy of the title of mad professor you have to be doing your own research and development. Subcontracting/ kidnapping/stealing from some other scientist in order to obtain your deathray would get you the title of evil leader perhaps but not mad professor.

I wouldn't begrudge a mad professor the assistance of a hunchbacked minion or two to do most of the grunt work but sitting there in his chair just doesn't cut it in my books. :p

Inspector Gadget is a good guess but if I remember correctly, the dog didn't actually talk. This dog is the eponymous character in this show. He usually gets into adventures and mishaps as a result of being the the guinea-dog for the professor's crazy inventions.

    @ JSBB:

I was thinking of the Head-of-Department types whose job seems to consist of looking busy, chairing seminars and sitting on Research Councils trying to steer the greatest amounts of funds towards their own university as possible. They generally have some nominal research associations, but do no lab work, preferring to sit in their giant office swivel chair telling people what they should research because "the EPSRC see it as a growth area". True, they may also have a hunchbacked assistant; at our uni, his name is Dr. Campbell (affectionately nicknamed "Ratman" by the students on account of his ponytail) but they never enter a lab, unless they're showing people around who may want to fund them.

As for the TV show, I'm right out of ideas.

The professor's name is Professor Dinghy. The name of the dog is the name of the show.

Hmm, I guess nobody else ever watched this show. I loved it. The name of the dog is the same as a slang word for someone who thinks alcohol is evil.

In one episode, they discovered a coelecanth. In another one, Professor Dinghy invented a mini video cam shaped like a bee that went around spying on people. In a classic episode, he inevnted a giant transformer robot that terrorised the neighbourhood. Brilliant!

OK, not that alcohol is evil, but still won't drink it. The first two words of the theme song were:

"Wow, wow, (followed by name of show and dog)"

No - the Littlest Hobo was not a talking dog, he was a real dog.

This dog's name sounds like the name of one of the people in Sha-na-na.
