Yes, you should. Also, an AMD proc is cheaper than an intel one of similar speed. For example the Athlon 64 3000+ is around 160 on Newegg, while the 3ghz pentium 4 is around 188. The difference in price is even larger in the new high-end procs, such as the FX-55 and the 3.4ghz Extreme Edition Pentium 4(850 bucks compared to upwards of 1,000 for the latter.)

AnandTech and Sharkey have regular comparative price lists for CPU's, motherboards, memory, etc. I found these useful in determining where the best price point is; there comes a point where the increase in price to more up one level in a product line isn't justified by the increase in performance. For example, with AMD, there currently seems to be a nice price point at a 3400+.

And as Rednik says, yes - focus on gaming performance, since your other applications don't require much at all.

Yep, I picked up my 3400+ when it replaced the 3200+ as the price point. I would also recommend the Newcastle cores instead of the Clawhammer ones.

Thanks a lot Tal for shooting down my 'list of why AMD sucks!' That's all I have! And to clarify, the article I read (forgot which magazine) was testing the thermal overload protection while using a benchmarking tool...so the CPU were being pushed to the max for a couple of minutes before the cooler was removed.

And what's the deal with code names of the CPUs? Northwood, Prescott, Newcastle, Clawhammer...come on people! That's almost as bad as "longhorn"! :rolling:

    We *aim* to please. :D

The joke from years back goes that whenever Intel needs a new code name, they throw a dart at the map of the US, and whatever's hit is the new code name. So now you know... ;)

I imagine the process with AMD is similar...
