What do 3E and 3.5E have to do with TotLM? Just like IWD and HoW, TotLM follows 2E rules (or a variant of them). As kmonster said the battles are tough because that's what the free expansion was designed for - offer battles for people who thought that IWD and HoW were too easy (I'll admit that on my 2nd playthrough I was one of these whiners :) ). It very much depends on both when you play HoW in relation to IWD and when you enter the TotLM areas when in HoW. I usually play HoW after finishing IWD completely, but even then you don't need to rush into TotLM straight away. If you leave it until just before the Sea of Ice your character levels will be in the 20s (possibly early 30s for some single classes) and at this point the combat should not pose much diffiiculty. You can always lower the difficulty setting if it's too tough.

From the threads I've seen, some people (like me) pick up a bug in the attack sounds when they install TotLM. Either they get no sounds when the characters are making physical attacks, or get a weird sound used by certain beetles in the game for everybody's attacks.

It is described without a solution here in these two threads
