    I'm with Monty, depends on the kind of surprise. For a pleasant surprise I usually do a half-laugh. For a startling surprise I usually become very quiet, shift to face the threat, and go to a defensive stance. If the sound that startled me is extremely close I usually just attack (my friends only think trying to scare me is fun once).
