The rock that Sepp had been hiding behind started to roll towards the snakes. As it got closer to them it gathered speed and started bouncing. Coming amongst the snakes, it rolled over and smashed as many as it could. The snakes bit it, but broke their teeth on its hard surface.

Venom watched in horror as his insides fell out onto the ground. How could this happen? He reached towards his healing potion, popped its cork, then saw it and himself slowly fall to the ground, he focused on the red potion seeping into the ground.

Viper's Fang saw Strangler stagger. The elf's blade had gone right through him, and judging by the blood spurting, also right through his liver. There went Venom down too. They were losing too many fighters. He placed both hands on Strangler and shouted, "Egesegedre-Most!" Healing poured into Strangler, and he jumped back up just in time to put himself between the elf and Viper's Fang.

Viper's Fang stepped back a bit, behind a line the remaining Snakes and Yuan-Ti were forming. He sensed a power signature out a ways that he hadn't felt for three decades. One that should have died a long time ago. One that he was surely going to finally end now. He began the chant for personal power.

Thrusting one scimitar high at Stranglers throat, Jex swung the second blade at stomach height hoeping to make quick work of the man and get to Vipers Fang before he finished his chanting.

"The mage, get the mage" Jex shouted, more to anyone than someone in pecular. They had to stop Vipers Fang, he seemed to be the only real threat.

Strangler blocked the high attack, but the low blow struck him full in the stomach. Luckily, it didn't get through his mail, though it did knock the wind out of him. He faded back a few steps, letting two of his Snakes take the brunt of the elf's attack for a moment. Against a fighter of the elf's obvious skill, they wouldn't stand a chance, though they would slow him down, if only for a breath or two, but that's what Snakes were for. Behind him he heard Viper's Fang finish his chanting, and he could see out of the corner of his eye the shape of his master blur for a second, then stretch, as he doubled in size.

"NEKEM VAN EROES!!!!" Viper's Fang blared triumphantly, holding his enlarged Adderstaff in one hand and a huge battle axe in the other. He took one step forward and swung them both at the bothersome elf.

Atten brushed the halfling’s hands from his shoulders annoyingly. But then he realised that he had felt that odd sensation before. But when?

A snake reared menacingly in front of him. Atten swatted at it with his staff and the serpent went flying in several pieces into some distant bushes.

Atten remembered when he had felt this way before. It had been when Darwyn had demonstrated how the living force could be used to enhance one’s strength. Atten tested his strength again by whacking the ground with his staff. It buried itself halfway into the earth. Somehow the halfling had managed to increase Atten’s strength.

Atten used his newfound brawn to despatch another couple of snakes and clear an area ahead of himself and Sepp. This strength was useful, but Atten knew enough to not become overconfident. Strength alone would not compensate for his lack of fighting skills. Snakes were one thing, but full-sized fighters were another. And DOUBLE-sized beings were yet another thing……..

Sepp grabbed Atten again and shook him.

"Idiot! Don't use my strength just to bash things! Cast your spells! I would, but Sepp's mind and body don't have the channels for the power to flow through at this strength. Yours do, though you may have a headache tomorrow. Get to work!"

A bolt pierced the neck of a human behind Jex. Nakia was startled to see the mage suddenly double in size. Ah, but what a great target he made. She doubted the bolt would do much damage but it should distract him and possibly turn his attention to her. Stepping from the shadows she raised the crossbow and fired.

She then moved a short way prepared to disappear into the shadows.

“Hey! Don’t shake me like that ever again!”

Atten considered his options. It was at times like these that he wished he knew some of the elemental type spells that Darwyn and some of the other Druids knew. Darwyn’s ability to call down lightning and fire and ice would have been perfect to use against the monster that confronted them.

But Atten had always favoured the living force and spent his time with plants and animals. He had little or no command over the non-living elements.

He also wished that Darwyn had lived long enough to continue his training in shapeshifting. But the only shape he knew was a squirrel. Even some of Darwyn’s shapes would not have been enough in this situation.

Atten decided he could only do whatever he could do. He took a deep breath and reached out to the living force of the plants around him. He felt the green mist descend over his eyes as he called upon the plants to assist in this battle. He channelled the living force into the plants, providing them with the power to move and grow with his command. His plan was to try and entangle as many of the remaining enemies as possible, to improve the odds for Jex and Maron.

He watched with green eyes as tendrils emerged from the ground and wrapped themselves around the Yuan Ti and robed humans. He saw them struggle against the empowered plants. He expected the power to end there. It didn’t. He started shaking as he felt still more of the living force flow through him. He could barely control this hitherto unknown power. It was all he could manage to direct it towards the giant mage. There was too much power. As Atten began to lose his grip on consciousness, he half imagined he saw three enormous pumpkin vines emerge from the ground near the giant. His last thoughts were that he must have gone insane. Pumpkins?

Atten legs gave way and he collapsed to the ground, the green mist replaced by darkness.

Jex managed to dodge the battle axe, but took a glancing blow from the adderstaff, it didn't cause any damage but sent the half elf spinning into the foliage. "I hate mages" he muttered as he bounced into a roll.

Useing his only magical item, his fathers family emblam, an amulet that had a few minor enchantments, like regenerative powers and it enabled the wearer to double in speed, he sprinted out of the trees again into the fray.

This time Jex was moving at double his already quick pace, running in between two Yaun ti he slashed at both of feeling his blades bite, he continued on into a diveing roll that launched him straight at Strangler with his swords leading the way. He was going to go right through Strangler and get to Vipers Fang. Vipers Fang might've been huge but Jex was hasted and he knew he was a more skilled fighter.

Viper's Fang saw the vegetation growing and entangling his fighters. How could such a simple spell have so much power? Three huge prickly vines started crawling around his legs. He hacked at them with his battle axe and focused on the source of his vexations. To his surprise, he saw it was a young male halfling, not the druidess he had expected, yet the power signature was the same. How had she done it? No matter, she would be crushed all the same.

In four huge bounds he was at the halfling. The human next to him collasped just as he arrived, saving him the trouble of smashing that scab. He dropped his weapons, grabbed the halfling with both hands, and squeezed.

He expected to turn the halfling into a bag of jelly, but it turned out that the halfling had the density of stone. It looked at him with burning eyes, and his eyes locked on them.

"YOU - SHOULD - HAVE - DIED - A - LONG - TIME -AGO!" He screamed in the halfling's face. His fingers were about to break, but he could feel the stonelike shell of the halfling waiver.

One of them was going to die soon.

Jex pulled his blades from Stranglers chest and ran past everyone else towards Vipers Fang. Jumping on the giantic humans back, he raied both scimitars in the air and brought them down as hard as his muscles would allow. Aiming right at the spinal cord of the man. It would at least stop the giant, if not kill him.

Maron saw what was happening, and calmly raised her hands in supplication. She chanted, and felt her hands begin to glow red.

A potent spell, one used for causing serious wounds to an attacker.

She followed Jex to the cultist, and laid a hand on the robed figure's back even as Jex attacked.

'One of the attacks must kill him' she thought.

Viper's Fang quivered as the scimitars entered his back, and then again as life was sucked out of him with a gentle touch. Such exquisite pain racked through him as he had never known before. "Aaaah," he sighed in an oddly gentle way.

Somehow he maintained his grip on the halfling with his right hand, while reaching up to his neck with his left. He pulled on a necklace chain and produced a crimson crystal, which he then crushed in his fingers.

An absence in space and time appeared where the crystal had been. Viper's Fang turned translucent. A horrible cracking was heard as Sepp broke into pieces and fell onto the ground, but those pieces too were translucent, and dissappeared into the ground as they landed. Sepp's physical body remained behind.

Ever so slowly, the form of Viper's Fang began drifting into the hole in the air before him. As his right hand left Sepp's body, it pulled with it a glowing form of a beautiful halfling woman, who was moaning wordlessly a pitiful lament.

Viper's Fang's hand was the last part of him sucked down the hole, still gripping the form of Sepp's mother. Though she struggled to release herself, it was in vain, as finally she was pulled through the hole, which closed with a grim finality as the last of her vanished.

The rock had been searching out the last of the snakes to smash. It had become much easier once they were tangled up and stopped moving away. For some odd reason the weeds didn't stick to the rock.

It stopped as it heard a painful moaning. It started to shake.

As soon as the rip in time dissappeared, it sailed through the air and smacked into Sepp's chest. A short "Whooomp!" was heard and there was a small explosion of light as it met Sepp's body.

The rock dropped to the ground like the rock it was. Sepp flew back five paces and landed on his back. He rolled onto his hands and knees gasping for air. When he finally was able to say something, all he could get out was, "Ma, Ma, comeback, comeback."

With the fadeing of Vipers Fang, Jex was off balance and fell through the translucent body landing hard in the ground below knocking the wind out of himself.

When the Mage disappeared the few remaining enemies quickly gathered together. Seeing this Nakia quickly shot a bolt disabling a yuan-ti. She started to run over to her group now on the ground but stopped, drank a potion which increased her speed and dashed at the enemies.

Now with sling in hand she dashed around them flinging bullets at them trying to bring their attention on her. The group appeared demorilized and uncertain what to do. One robed human was trying to chant something. A couple of the others tried to catch the halfling.

Nakia just kept moving and slinging bullets, hoping Jex would revive or Maron could help.

She was gone. Ever since coming to him in the tavern, Ma had been present to him. Not communicating with him, but just being there. A soft hand on his shoulder, giving him the strength and the courage to keep going. Her absence was a searing hole in his soul. All because of these snake people. She was gone.

His pain turned into a burning rage. Most of the snake people were tangled up in the big roots and grass that Atten had brought up. Sepp reached out to the plants and asked them to quickly grow thorns. Big, long, sharp thorns that would pierce into the soft parts of the snake people. He poured all of his sorrow and anger and grief of the past week into his plea to the plants.

He soon saw the effects of his request. Several of the snake people stopped squirming altogether after a brief sudden increase in their struggles. Pulling out his sling, he started pelting the remainders along with Nakia. It wasn't pretty or gallant, but he felt no pity for them.

Nakia and Sepp quickly disposed of the now helpless foes. Nakia raced over to Sepp's brother. He was unconcious but breathing. Her quick examination showed her that he had been badly hurt.

"Sepp, come, your brother needs you.'

Nakia suddenly collapsed on the ground herself, still awake but not moving.

'Hah! Stupid mammals!' Ixnathielex thought, 'This trick works every time, though for me it will be the last. Haknag-ha!'

A Yuan-Ti that had recently gone down next to the bound prisoner suddenly jerked its head over to the female halfling that had just fallen down and bit her in the leg. It flexed its venom muscles twice, then flicked its head over to the prisoner and bit into his side, emptying its venom sacks.

Hefting his head up, he cackled, "The fellowship of the Serpent will be victorious!"

"Nooooo!" Sepp screamed. He drew his short sword and rushed at the Snake thing. He plunged the blade through its head. He dropped to Nakia and put his hand over the fang marks. "Hold on Nakia, I'll do what I can."

He didn't know how to remove the poison, only slow it. Hopefully Atten or Maron could do more. He hummed a short tune and gestured over Nakia's wound, then with the energy still in his hands, quickly moved them over Gesed's side.

Now he took a good look at Gesed. He didn't look good. His mouth was bound, as were his hands, and from the shape and size of the wraps on his legs, there was no way that his feet could still be in there. He carefully removed the gag over Gesed's mouth. It looked like his jaw was broken. Gesed smiled feebly at Sepp with his eyes. Sepp took one of Ma's extra special drinks and gently helped his brother drink it. His body shook and shivered as it took effect. Sepp borrowed strength from the thorny plants that were now receding, and put some of his own strength too, and channeled it into Gesed. He would live, but the healing process would be long and hard. Still, he was alive and so was Sepp, along with Black, they were a family.

    Where was Black?

"Black, where are you?" Sepp called.
