I'm sure I read something about there being nothing that strength in the country since about 8 or 10 years ago when iirc there was a quake about 4.8 or something? Hence I would imagine that would add to the scare factor...

I've been through so many earthquakes I can't even count them. The most memorable were:

I was on the 27th floor of the Transamerica building in Los Angeles when a fairly big one hit. It was amazing watching the horizon tilt back and forth as the ENTIRE DAMN BUILDING rocked about 5° either side of center. The quake only lasted a few seconds, but the rocking went on for several minutes.

In boot camp a small earthquake hit during the night. I didn't notice it at all, but was woken by mournful wails of several men who were positive they "were going to die."

I moving back to LA after being away several years, a good sized earthquake hit on a Saturday afternoon. Things were falling off walls, shelves, dressers ... a lot of noise. The entire house was shaking, the furniture even moved a bit. I managed to grab my 5-year-old daughter and hold her in a doorway just as it ended. She was scared. I told her what happened and let her know there may be a few aftershocks. Sure enough, one hit in just a few minutes and I found my daughter standing in a doorway -- "I knew just what to do, dad. You don't need to watch me, I'll make sure I get in a doorway for the next one, too." She was so proud of herself, I was too.

That's exactly what I was thinking - regardless of whether it was 4.7 or 5.2 (although as Rally correctly points out 5.2 is acutally several times more intense than a 4.7) it may be possible that since buildings in Britain are not designed to deal with quakes of that magnitude, that the damage may be more than what you would expect. On the other hand, if a 5.2 magnitude earth quake hit southern California, you'd see very little damage at all, because building codes requires all sturctures to be built to withstand that magnitude of earthquake and much more.
