58 minutes real-time? Did they use first-level characters, or maxed-out ones? Less than an hour is impossible with 1st-level characters, unless there's some weird bug I've never heard of!

Actually, 58 minutes isn't as unreasonable as it sounds. I recall there being a download somewhere with BG being completed in just over three quarters of an hour.

    Scary stuff.

58 minutes is nuts. It takes me that long to just do the Targos Docks, especially fighting all those pesky goblins in the tunnels. Swing. Miss. Swing. Miss. Swing. Miss. Swing. Miss. Ouch. Better go back for a rest and come back. Swing. Miss. That takes half an hour on it own!

Here are a few links to some interesting speedruns:
    Baldurs Gate 0:30:24
    BG speedrun

That one is not a single segment run but heres one of those, done in just over 1 hour

    BG single segment run

Baldurs Gate 2 done in 1:11:37

    BG2 speedrun

and of course the Icewind Dale 1 run in 58:00 minutes

    IWD run

I highly recomend that you watch these ones, in high quality if can download it :) This said IWD2 is very different from these games. Atleast it feels that way. What battles in the game do you really *have* to fight? Targos, Shaengarne, Guthma in the ice palace against the sisters. These are just a few, but they take some time. In IWD there are less battles which makes it really fast to speedrun.

I'm curious, are they beaten starting with level 1 characters?

Yes they are except BG2 where you start with a higher level character. IWD1 and BG1 are done with a single character. No parties here :)

    Hmm, well that's mighty impressive!

However, I would be interested in seeing how quickly people beat those games (and IWDII) in game time, not just real time. However, Icewind Dale II in real time would be interesting as well.

I reckon that IDWII in real time would be a lot longer than any of the others, since there are many required battles, some of which take a long time.

Goblins in Targos, the Horde at the Bridge, Guthma in the Fortress (is he the only required kill?).

In the Ice Palace area, the Queen Remorhaz, Sherincal(?), the three sisters.

The various Fell Wood quests, though I guess having a Paladin would save on the Limha quest. You definitely have to kill the Dark Treants.

In the River Caves, kill Harshom to get his key.

In the Monastery, kill Salisham or Aruma (?) to get the key OR do the 8 chambers. I think killing has to be faster.

In the Underdark, kill the Visciamera spawning thing, thenintimidate or kill the Elder Brain.

In Kuldahar, I guess you don't have to kill anyone until you get to Chult, where I think killing the Guardian would be faster than killing Jezebel + the head Yuan-ti guy. Then come back and face another massive battle during the invasion.

In Dragon's Eye, not much necessary killing, but a lot of really convoluted fetch quests, and then poisoning the water. Then the unavoidable 5-day time loop with tons of cut-scenes.

In Fields of Slaughter, I guess you can just keep going past everything.

In Severed Hand, get rid of the guards (fetch quest), poison the water (fetch quests + killing) (not necessary but probably very helpful), get Pudu's key, fight the top of the war tower, then fight Isair & Madae.

I reckon that this is at least 2 hours of real time, and I don't know how low-level character(s) can do some of this stuff, as there aren't as many super-duper items (relative to enemy strength) as in a game like BG1.

Would be cool to see an attempt, though!

In IWD2 it's a delicate balance between levling and just skipping battles. Maybe its faster to level on some side quests than certain optional battles. I wonder what number of party members is optimal for speedrunning IWD2? 2 maybe? A paladin/sorc and some cleric-build maybe? I have played the game far to little to know what parts can be skipped and what is must do things. And of the must do quests, how much is actually needed to be done. In the IWD speedrun it is only required to actually enter the caves outside easthaven to complete the quest.

This thread inspired me to make a time run. I'm in the process of clearing out the driders and the in- game time is 6 days 10 hours. I can probably make it to dragon's eye in 9 days. To the fields of slaughter in 15 and face Isair and Madae in about 17.

The party consists of a human monk and a halfling bard. The strange thing is that I've only rested once in about 6 1/2 days and neither of the characters have become tired. Is this a bug?

Edit: I made it to dragon's eye in 8 days exactly.

I think it's awesome that you are making a fast run through the game. Will you make a pure speedrun out of it later, ie record a movie? Id love to see that :) Keep up the good work.

I won't make a speedrun video as it would be as boring to watch as it was to play. Lots of trial and error, cheese and reloads. Also, I could not match the brilliance of the baldur's gate and icewind dale speedruns posted in this thread.

Dragons eye and the time loop foiled my speedrun effort. Dragon's eye took 2 days and 15 hours to complete. The time loop took just under 8 days. The fields of slaughter took 10 hours as I rested once.

At 18 days and 23 hours I am just starting the severed hand.

20 days have passed and the monk and bard are level 18 and 16 respectively. I didn't add the bard until the caravan bridge, so he is lagging behind a bit.

I'm in the cleric tower trying to get the antidote for Ormis, I could really use his help in the final battle...but I haven't been able to beat Tyranar after about 5 tries. The only things left undone are to go kill Pudu, disrupt the meeting in the war tower aerie and the final battle.

Edit: The time run is complete, 20 days 17 hours.
