I may be persona non grata here because I posted in that OTHER thread - but there are things I deeply loathe about Christmas.

There are people I miss terribly at this time of year, not all of them dead, even. The broken relationships of my life haunt me right now. The loneliness in the midst of all the publicly assumed cheer is even more painful. And though I am lucky to have an extended family I both love and can get along with, but I am single and aging, and both those states are going to continue, sports fans. Each passing Christmas reminds me of that.

I like some Christmas music, but almost all the kitsch in public places, on the radio, on TV, is maddeningly awful.

And, yeah, I'm with Enagonios - if you believe the world needs work, why only acknowledge that at Christmas? It especially drives me insane that so much attention is paid to the poor only now. For example, there's much ado locally about a project to rebuild a house for a family who had theirs burn down over Thanksgiving weekend. Well, what about the rest of the year, when people have their house burn down?

Saw an article about churches that have Blue Christmas services at this time of year - no Christmas decorations, and they invite people grieving recent deaths or anyone else struggling with Christmas. It's an awful season if you're clinically depressed.

So, there's much to despise about it, and many reasons to rejoice when it's over, even if there are things I like about it, too.

    And now I'll shut up.

Bingo. Even though I think of children as STDs, my wife and I are still planning of having kids...in about 5+ years. We have plans to travel the US, Europe, and the Caribbean...and we don't need any ankle-biters ruining said plans. Hell, we've gone 5 years without popping out a kid, we can last another 5 years.

Anyway, just because *I* despise something, doesn't mean that I'm going to make life miserable for all those around me. Kids *should* like Xmas...it's one of 2 times a year when they actually get the crap they want. When I do end up having kids, I want them to be happy. They can find out that life is best lived as a pessimist on their own. :rolling:

I had to finish my Xmas shopping in the hour and a half left of shopping time after we closed early yesterday. :flaming: (By finish I mean do all of it.)

Why do the general public turn into aimlessly wandering morons at this time of year?!

Well, I'm at my Ma's place, and guess what's playing in the background? F****** Xmas carols.

Good thing I brought my laptop, noise-insulating headphone, a couple of blunts and some booze.

Gad, how I wish this day was over. F****** Xmas...

Now, excuse me while I go play Diablo II with Winamp running in the background to provide me with some good, non-carol music.

Their brains get sucked out by the hackneyed music and garish store decorations.

It's like they've never been outside their homes before December.

I know when you get old, your hearing goes bye-bye. But JHC, does the radio *have* to be turned up to 11!?!!? You are right f****** next to it, stupid! How f******* deaf can you be? :almostmad:

If I remember correctly, Christmas WAS supposed to be about some religious matter. It wasn't called Christmas for nothing.

Well, regarding what Christmas was supposed to be about, most of its history it has been much more secular than sacred. In the U.S. only since WWII have most Americans thougth going to church was something you might do on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

For me, yes, it is religious. But I find my spiritual life goes better when it is out of step rather than in step with the culture, so let them all get drunk, broke, angry at each other, and sappy, all at once. That way I know I'm not them.

Well, yes, my blood pressure does go up anyway.

Xmas is dead and gone and yet there's still Xmas movies and commercial rampaging around.

    FFS! That's enough!

    /me whips out the Daniels

    Blessed be Lynchburg, Tennessee.
