Hehe. I didn't say that's ALL that should be taught! :) IMO there are lots of things that can be taught in PE, but as you say, there's probably not much teaching going on in reality.

I think the most learning I got from any PE class I had was in high school where they taught us weight training and how to keep track of progress in your overall fitness.

@Chandos: That's because the way PE is taught in many countries is apalling.

I was lucky enough to have an ex-athlete as my PE teacher during Secondary School (High School). We learned about the proper way to warm up and stretch, depending on the exercise. We learned the rules and practiced different sports, including: 50 and 100m race, long distance races, hurdles, relays, high and long jumps, football (soccer), basketball, volleyball, handball, shot put, race walking, cross-country races, basic gymnastic moves...

We were also taught the proper way to swim in different styles, along with water safety.

We were requested to train in teams, and also act as umpires in different competitions. Nutrition (not only sport related) was also an important part of the theory classes.

The way I see it, all this gave us an appreciation for different sports, help building up team spirit and discipline, and increased not only our fitness and health level, but also our social skills...

Not to mention that giving a bunch of young punks access to decent facilities, and encouraging us to keep ourselves busy training on a daily basis, managed to keep most of us out of trouble when we were not hitting the books. ;)
