Just had some time with Colin McRae Dirt 2, which I'd once bought for a friend in a budget re-edition and ended up buying for myself so we could play online. I ended up using the single-player to destress on Sundays. I work like 16 hours a day on all other days.

Come on, Splunge, since when does a bean counter dislike micro-management? :p

    I'm more of a management-type bean-counter, where I let my staff do the actual work. :p :D

And you don't even micro-manage your staff? ;)

    Oh, he does, but that's completely un-work-related. I am surprised a non-accountant knows that euphemism . . .

I... had not thought of that interpretation.

But even then, I would expect his wife to do the micro-management. Or is that where marriage comes in, as T2B likes to alude to?

Didn't realize that my rep included a lack of sense of humor. Gotta work on that I suppose.

I didn't mean it that way. Your post was just a bit more risque than I'm used to seeing you, at least outside the confines of MUG. ;)

Ignoring dmc’s off-colour twist on that comment (which I would never partake in since I’m not that kind of person :D ), no. Once staff are trained, I manage them by letting them do their jobs, keeping the lines of communication open, and providing regular feedback, but I’m not about to dictate to them what they should be doing every minute of the day. People generally don't like to be micro-managed. Unlike NPC's in CPRG's. :)

It's been a long few weeks. I haven't touched any games since September.

I'm rewarding myself with Civilization V. I've never played any of the games from this series, but it looks pretty awesome. Steam is downloading right now, so it should be ready for me before I wrap up my work day (which I'm feeling like I ought to do that very soonish).

Wow, Civ V is quite the enthralling game. Can't believe I've never tried this series before.

Replaying Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. On Hard....

One of my all time favorites.
Souped up with some community made models and texture enhancement and it feels as fresh and awesome as ever.

The engine aged well IMO, and I'm still amazed at the overall scope of the levels.

Finally finished Dragon Age: Origins on the weekend (took a lot longer than I expected). Started to play Left 4 Dead 2 (which was the next game I had to play on my unplayed games list), but just couldn't get into it, so started Portal 2. I think P2 is even better than the first one, which is saying a lot given how much I enjoyed Portal. Took a quick look at the table of contents of a walkthrough just to get an idea how long the game is - pretty good length, but I think I'll find myself playing more often than I really should :), so it shouldn't take long to get through it (at least compared to how long it usually takes me to finish a game).

I broke down and bought another 2 games on sale at Christmas through Steam, so after Portal 2 (and ignoring L4D2), I’ll still have 8 games to play (well, 7½ if you don’t count Half-Life 2: Episode 2 as a full game). That should keep me going for another 2 years at least.

    Yes. Yes you did. :)

I actually owe you a "thanks", because I'm pretty sure it was a post of yours that convinced me to buy the original Portal. Puzzle games aren't usually my cup of tea, but something about one of your comments (I don't remember what it was exactly) convinced me to give it a try - one of the better gaming purchase decisions I've made. :)

Has anyone tried "Path of Exile" yet?
It's as good as Torchlight 2 and in many ways Better than D3!

It's in Beta right now and other than the fact that their servers are overloaded, the game plays marvelously! I'm having a blast!

Been playing a game I picked up a while ago on GoG, called Evolva.

It's a pretty fun game. It's from 2000, and it's in 3D. As you might expect from a game of that age that is in 3D, it's all pretty polygon-y. They use an artstyle that handles it well, though and even now it doesn't come off looking overly dated.

In the game, you have four creatures under your control, one of which you can control directly in third person, while the other three are then AI controlled. Luckily, the AI isn't retarded and the ones not under your direct control actually manage fairly well. For fine control you'll want to control them directly, though.

With your four creatures, you explore the map - which is pretty bare, this being an early 3D game, after all - kill parasite creatures and fullfil your objectives. The fun part is that when you kill creatures, you can absorb their DNA and use it to further mutate your own creatures. You can give them new weapons, stronger abilities like further jumping, faster running and better armour through this mechanic.

The overall blend is actually quite fun. The four creatures each start with a basic set of propensities, so to say. There's a fast one, an agile one, a strong one and a sort of intelligent one. The intelligent one is basically the same as the agile creature as far as I can tell, though supposedly more accurate with ranged weapons.

The mutation mechanic adds an RPG element to the action mix, with which you can decide on the go if you want to specialize one creature for one weapon and one attribute, while picking another for another specialisation, making them basically faster, stronger and better. The more creatures you kill, the more DNA your own creatures collect and the more you can mutate them.

The fast one is also the most fragile, and can do with some armor, but is at the same time pretty awesome to use with a canon on his arm with which he can circle strafe enemies. The strong one is slow and hits hard, so mutate him for armour and melee and he's quite formidable. You'll not want to neglect the speed and jumping too much on him, though. Without a heightened jumping ability, you'll otherwise have to leave him behind in some places (sometimes you'd literally not be able to finish a level with a creature without at least a basic boost in jumping). And speed is good because the maps are quite big and require a lot of running around so it'll become a bit of a drag if he's too slow to keep up with the rest. Anything you change will change their appearance too, which is a nice touch.
