This year is drawing to a close, and we're already looking forward to what's coming in 2025. The following year is packed with new titles, some of which are sequels to legendary names in the RPG world. What exactly can players expect in 2025? Next year, RPG fans can expect dozens of themes that appeal to various player preferences, ranging from dark fantasy and futuristic sci-fi to fairy tales and historical adventures. Considering the diversity of themes and the possibility of choice, no wonder RPGs are still among the most popular and most wanted games. In this article, we'll introduce you to some of the top upcoming RPG games to explore at the beginning of 2025.
"Avowed"
Obsidian Entertainment's fantasy game was initially scheduled for November 2024 but was delayed "to give players' backlogs some breathing room," as Xbox stated on X. The new release date is February 18, 2025, and it will be available for PC via Steam and Xbox Series. We hope the wait will be worth it since its development took over five years, making it one of the longest ongoing productions in Obsidian's history.
The story of "Avowed" is set in the world of Eora, well-known from the "Pillars of Eternity" games. In this game, players are cast as emissaries from the Aedir Empire, sent to investigate a deadly plague spreading through the fantastic Living Lands.
We don't know much about the story. Still, we understand that this first-person game will give you an experience shaped by the personality, vibe, and philosophy you are ready to give your character, as stated by Avowed's creative director, Carrie Patel, in several interviews.
"Dune: Awakening"
Another awaited blockbuster is here, developed and published by Funcom. With this sequel, you will be free to explore one of the most dangerous fictional desert planets — Arrakis. If you haven't read the "Dune" books or watched the movie, we suggest you get into it, as there are plenty of familiar characters.
According to creative director Joel Bylos, "Dune: Awakening" is a survival game "where you must search for water and shelter, search for shelter, and walk softly on the sand to avoid the sandworms." Additionally, you'll be doing this online with thousands of other players.
The release window is "early 2025," and until then, you can explore the beta test on their official page.
"Monster Hunter Wilds"
One more eagerly awaited name in the role-play game world has confirmed an open beta test this month. Players can experience pieces of this Capcom action RPG video game and see what to expect from 28 February, the official release date.
Compared to previous parts, fans can now expect new and changing ecosystems, new monsters, and situations where players may have to battle more than one monster at once.
The Monster Hunter titles are known for their rich, immersive worlds filled with various environments and monsters, each with unique designs and lore. Developed by Warhorse Studios, the sequel's release date is 11 February. If you are a fan of revenge, betrayal, and adventure set in the 15th-century Kingdom of Bohemia or just love Medieval Europe, this game might be the right choice.
"Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter"
Last but not least, there is one more sequel. Bug Studio and CI Games' United Label have announced one more indie release — an action RPG titled, "Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter."
Look no further if you have a thing for gore, violence, dark fantasy, animals, and northern winter. Also, get ready for tons of action and a glimpse of horror.
The game will be available via Steam on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
