Hardcore Assassin’s Creed fans may not have to wait much longer to get their hands on the next installation in the series. According to a LinkedIn post that was just spotted by a Twitter user, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red might be around the corner.
Arisa Lagunzad, a Ubisoft employee responsible for business development and brand partnership, took to LinkedIn four months ago seeking sponsoring partners for the publisher’s next triple-A entry. In her post, she described Assassin’s Creed Codename Red as the “biggest blockbuster for 2024.” Lagunzad also hinted at cross-media marketing collaborations, including a tie-in manga series.
Strangely enough, this LinkedIn post went unnoticed for months before Twitter user Access the Animus detected it. This reliable fan resource on all things Assassin’s Creed shared a screenshot that got the whole gaming community talking. Tellingly, the post has since been edited to remove any explicit time reference.
This leaked rumour coincides with the few official details we have on the next Assassin’s Creed title, nonetheless. Assassin’s Creed Codename Red was first announced during the Ubisoft Forward 2022 with a simple teaser that only served to build up the excitement. Precious little bits of information have been disclosed so far. Still, a host of rumours suggested that the project handled by Ubisoft Quebec was progressing well.
Gameplay-wise, reliable sources like the insider Tom Henderson have also disclosed that the upcoming game shall future two playable protagonists, a woman and a man. Comparing the episode to the bushido-infused RPG Ghost of Tsushima, Henderson revealed that one character would be a samurai and the other a shinobi – the traditional name given to ninjas.
Vocal fans of the franchise had been clamouring for years for the series to venture into Japanese territory. The leaked LinkedIn post even acknowledged this popular outcry, mentioning that the Land of the Rising Sun was the “most requested history/culture” by the series’ dedicated fans.
Set in feudal Japan, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red will be the first title to return to Asia after the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles subseries explored China and India in 2015 and 2016 respectively. This brand-new title shall also build upon the RPG formula introduced in Origins. This next premium open-world instalment is expected to focus primarily on stealth and infiltration.
Hence, expectations are high that Assassin’s Creed Codename Red might usher in a new era for Ubisoft’s flagship franchise. Additionally, the newly-introduced Assassin’s Creed Infinity hub will actively reshape the series’ storytelling. This over-arching platform is set to allow gamers to act as an Animus to leap into the past. Effectively, hopping from one instalment to another is poised to unite the franchise’s epochs and tie together all future AC entries.
And many new installations are expanding the AC universe. Up to eleven games are currently under development. While most are in their early stages of production, some games are well underway. Centring around the witch trials in 16th-century Europe and slated for release no sooner than 2025, Assassin’s Creed Hexe looks to be the darkest entry to date in the franchise.
During the interval, the franchise is rekindling the nostalgia for its Middle Eastern roots on October 12, 2023. Set in 12th-century Baghdad, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will herald the comeback of Master Assassin Basim Ibn Ishaq, who first appeared in AC Valhalla. Despite being much smaller in scale than most of its expansive predecessors, Mirage will bring back some fan-favourite elements like the outfit dyeing feature and the social stealth ability.
Lingering rumours have also resurfaced lately, pointing at the inclusion of real gambling features. Despite Ubisoft denying these claims, the game’s Xbox store page maintains these allegations. Time will tell whether Mirage contains mechanics that allow players to make money out of games of chance.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of online options for gamers to scratch their gambling itch. Platforms even boast thousands of fun pokies for free. As many classic machine slots as inventive video slots are mobile-friendly to enjoy them on the go. The best tabletop games are also a click away. And from slots like Book of 1001 Nights to Gates of Persia, the Middle Eastern theme is going strong for diehard AC fans looking for distraction before returning to the franchise’s origins.
Ubisoft has high hopes that Assassin’s Creed Codename Red has the potential to rejuvenate its flagship franchise entirely. So, will this Japanese-themed instalment deliver? This massive blockbuster in the making is reportedly dropping in 2024.
