THE MORTUARY, SECOND FLOOR

Your goal on this floor is to escape the Preparation Room and then find your way to the open staircase to the third floor at number 15 on the map below.

You should make it a habit to speak to everybody and search all containers. This is fairly safe on this floor but may be more dangerous later.

Escaping the Preparation Room

Morte suggests that you arm yourself with a scalpel that he saw on one of the shelves. The scalpel is on the shelf at 3. When you have found the scalpel, Morte approaches you again and suggests that you attack the zombie that has the key. You can "suggest" in return that he should help you fight the zombie. Open your inventory screen and make sure you're wielding the scalpel, they "talk" to each of the zombies to find out which of them has the key to the door (it is Zombie 782 at 2 in the lower right corner of the room). Make sure that both you and Morte are selected, then press the "A" key to enter Attack mode and click the zombie to attack. It should go down in a matter of moments so you can loot its body by clicking the items on the ground and pick up the key. Now go to the door at the lower left corner of the room and click it to open it. Congratulations, you have escaped the Preparation Room. Now all you need to do is to escape the rest of the Mortuary!

You can also loot the other tables in the room before leaving. You will find two bandages on the table above the locked staircases at 5. And you can kill the other two zombies in this room for 65 XP and one bandage each.

Getting to the Third Floor

The next step in your daring escape is to make your way to the staircases at 15 by walking clockwise around the second floor.

When you leave the Preparation Room, Morte approaches you again and suggests that you keep a low profile. Don't kill any zombies and don't speak to anyone. He will tell you that the Mortuary is run by a faction called the "Dustmen" and that they will not be happy to see you escape.

Morte especially insists that you shouldn't kill any of the female zombies ("They're dead, we're dead, see?"). You can mock him as much as you like or simply shrug it off, your choice.

Finally, Morte suggests that you start a new journal instead of the one you're missing. You will start a new journal, and you will hear the words "Updated my journal" spoken for the first time. Later, every time you learn something new or get a new quest, you will hear these words and see the words "Journal Updated" floating above you. Check your journal regularly to see which quests you have completed and which still need to be done.

Zombie 965 at 6 is walking around in a triangle. "Speak" to him, and Morte will intervene to tell you about the "Rule of Three". This is the belief that things do happen in series of three. Morte doesn't believe in this "wash", as he calls it, but you will find that some things happen in threes. And of course that some don't.

Dhall at 7 can tell you a lot about where you are and what you are. Apparently you have been here many times! Very interesting; do you regularly die and reawaken? And some of your old companions may also be found here; for example a woman who used to travel with you is buried on the first floor. You should also pay special attention to what he tells you about the Dustmen and their philosophy, since it may be useful later. Dhall will tell you that you are in the Mortuary in the town of Sigil, and that he has protected you many times from being incinerated by delaying it until you woke up.

If you kill Dhall, he drops his Quill Pen. Of course this counts as an Evil thing to do.

You can take a note from Zombie 1201 at 9. Fold the note in the correct order to gain a Rule-Of-Three Earring.

The Receiving Room Logbook which you can find at 8 contains information about what is going on in this room. One of the pages is missing but can be found with Zombie 1664 at 10; this page contains the entry about your own arrival in the Mortuary. On one of the other shelves at 8 you will find 13 copper pieces and some fist irons (these are your own possessions, as you can see from the note taken from Zombie 1664).

Ei-Vene at 11 is deaf and nearly blind. Morte will explain to you that Ei-Vene is a tiefling; a cross between human and fiend. Ei-Vene will mistake you for a zombie and tell you to get her some Needle and Thread and some Embalming Fluid.

This is the first of many minor quests and one of the easier to carry out. You can find the Needle and Thread on Zombie 506 at 12 or on one of the shelves on the third floor. Embalming Fluid can be found on two of the embalming machines at 14. You gain 250 XP for solving this quest.

When you report back to deliver the goods, make sure to study the motion of Ei-Vene's hands. You will recall a memory of doing the same to hide something inside a corpse with the number 42. When you speak to her, Ei-Vene will still think you're a zombie and try to "fix you up" a bit by stitching you together and applying Embalming Fluid. Let her work to gain an extra hit point.

Zombie 821 at 13 is not a zombie at all but an Anarchist named Vaxis who is spying on the Dustmen. He will ask you to get the key to the Embalming Room from Ei-Vene. Simply go back to Ei-Vene and "ask" for the key, and she will give it to you. You gain 250 XP for getting the key from Ei-Vene and another 250 XP for bringing it to Vaxis. In return, Vaxis tells you that you can escape the Mortuary through a portal on the first floor. You will need a portal key – a Crooked Finger Bone – which you can find on the third floor (another 250 XP for gaining this information).

If asked, Vaxis will tell you that he can disguise you as a zombie if you can find him some Needle and Thread and Embalming Fluid. You can find more Needle and Thread on the third floor and more Embalming Fluid at 14 in the next room. This is a practical way to disguise yourself if you want to hide from nosy Dustmen, and disguising as a Zombie earns you a bonus of 500 XP. Just note that you can't run or wield weapons while wearing this disguise.

Another option is to bluff Vaxis into thinking that you are here to replace him. He will give you three bandages, a jar of Embalming Fluid, a Needle and Thread and a knife. Or, you can go back to Dhall and turn Vaxis in for 250 XP. Please note that if you turn Vaxis in, you won't be able to join the Anarchist faction in Act 5.

At 15 you will find stairs up to the third floor and down to the first floor. The stairs down are locked until you have been up to the third floor and found the Mortuary Sanctum Key that allows you to open all stairs in the Mortuary.

At 16, open the cupboard to take the closed ring. The cupboard is closed, so you have to "attack" it ("A" key) to break it open. Many locked containers can be opened this way but some need the lockpicking skills of a thief.

You can't get into the locked room at 17 until you have the Mortuary Sanctum Key from the third floor. If you enter this room you will find next to nothing; a couple of Bandages on the floor and a female zombie.
