THE WEEPING STONE CATACOMBS
This is the area where Sigil has buried its dead, and where Pharod's Collectors loot the graves to sell the bodies back to the Dustmen. You will be fighting Cranium Rats, Wererats, Lesser Varguilles and a selection of undead to make your way to either the Dead Nations or the Warrens of Thought.
Besides the main Catacombs, there are four smaller crypts for you to explore: The Crypt of the Embraced, the Shattered Crypt, the Mosaic Crypt, and the Crypt of Dismemberment.
Before you proceed to the Dead Nations or the Warrens of Thought, I suggest that you explore this area and the four crypts fully.

Through the Catacombs
You can return to the Buried Village at 1.
At 2 you can find a chest with a Human Skull and 4 copper pieces.
The first time you enter, there will be a hostile Cranium Rat at 3. It will flee to 5.
At 3 you can also find the dead body of a collector. Once you have learned to speak to the dead (from Stale Mary in the Dead Nations), you can learn that he was one of Gris' companions and that they were attacked by monsters in one of the crypts.
The barrel at 4 contains some treasure:
At 5 you will be attacked by a pack of spellcasting Cranium Rats. Take out the spellcasting rat first, then slay the rest. The jar in the corner here contains the Tears of Sorrow.
Two Ghouls are waiting for you at 6.
One of the jars at 7 contains a Gold Ring.
At 8 you will find two hostile Wererats.
At 9 you will find two containers with:
There are some hostile Zombies at 10.
At 11 you will find the body of the collector Chad. You can't communicate with him until you have learned to speak with the dead (talk to Stale Mary in the Dead Nations). Once you learn to speak with the dead, talk to Chad. He has been bitten by a Varguille and is about to turn into one himself. To save him, you must kill the three Varguilles at 13. When you report back, he will tell you the location of the Decanter of Endless Water – it is in the Drowned Nations, beyond the Dead Nations. Solving his quest nets you 3,750 XP.
There are three hostile Varguilles waiting for you at 12.
At 13 there are three more Varguilles. These Varguilles will keep respawning each time you enter the Catacombs from other areas (including the crypts) until you have gotten Chad's quest to kill them.
When you pass by 14, the stone head Glyve addresses you. Glyve has been cursed to remain here until water passes his lips. To help him, you must find the Decanter of Endless Water. You can find the decanter in the Drowned Nations. On returning to him, help Glyve rest for 5,000 XP. He will tell you that Nemelle in the Clerk's Ward (whom you will meet in Act 5) knows the command word of the Decanter. With the command word you can use the Decanter of Endless Water to free Ignus in the Smoldering Corpse Bar.
A bunch of Varguilles will attack you at 15.
The container at 16 holds a Shamanic Rod and a Human Skull.
The entrance to the Crypt of the Embraced is at 17.
The entrance to the Shattered Crypt is at 18.
The entrance to the Mosaic Crypt is at 19.
The entrance to the Crypt of Dismemberment is at 20.
At 21 there is a portal to the Bones of the Night. This portal is not active until Act 5 when this area becomes available.
At 22 you will find the entrance to the Dead Nations.
At 23 you will find the entrance to the Warrens of Thought.
In this crypt you will find the body of the dead collector Gris.

Open the coffin at 2 to speak with Gris. If you have learned to speak with the dead, you can ask him where he has hidden Quint's charm.
Gris wants to know if he is still in the Catacombs or whether his companions brought his body back to the Buried Village. He also wants to know whether his companions are dead or alive. Telling him the truth is Lawful, lying is Chaotic. You can find out that his companions are dead by speaking to the dead collector at 3 in the Catacombs, near the exit to the Buried Village.
When you approach the coffin for the first time, three Ghouls appear through a portal and attack you. They deal out a fair amount of damage but leave behind some useful items, including one or two Heart Charms and a Bone Dagger.
This crypt has some quite good treasure – and a difficult fight!

The Container at 2 holds 510 copper pieces.
Search through the bones for:
You would do well to keep the punch daggers for the time being. They are one of the better enchanted weapons this early in the game and if you don't want to use them yourself, you can give them to Annah when she joins you at the end of Act 3.
When you approach the treasure, you will be attacked by a large number of Varguilles. For some time, another Varguille will spawn each time you kill one. This can be a tough fight so keep your healing charms handy.
This crypt holds no monsters but a few traps. Stay out of the depression in the floor; it is an acid trap!

Open the chest at 2 by lockpicking it or smashing it open to find:
The traps at 4 and 5 can be disarmed for a wee bit of experience if you're playing as a Thief.
There are no monsters in this crypt but plenty of traps! And next to no treasure but you'll definitely want to explore the Underchamber.
Map Key
The coffin holds only a Leg Bone Club and a Human Skull. Be wary of the traps in the floor!
Take the stairs down to the Underchamber at 2.
The Underchamber
This chamber holds only a large pool of blood, a few rats who will flee before you, and a dead body.

At 2, take the Severed Arm from the dead body. Make sure to identify it. You will realize that it is your own arm from an earlier life. You can take it back to Fell in the Southeastern Hive Sector to have the tattoos identified. This is described on the Act 4 Overview page.
