BALDUR'S GATE - NORTHEAST SECTION
Larze
Now I go to the northeast section, and enter the Blushing Mermaid Tavern. I immediately get accosted by an enormous Ogre named Larze. I could choose a dialogue option to avoid fighting him and still get 900xp, but I'd rather just kill him.
Be forewarned that he can hit for a lot of damage, and takes quite a bit himself before going down. The preference is to immobilize him before cutting him down. I show a reliable method for this. First, Yeslick casts Doom on him, which not only reduces his THAC0 by 2 but his saving throws as well. Imoen follows up with her Wand of Paralysis, which holds him place.
He'll leave behind a few miscellaneous treasures, as well as another pair of Gauntlets of Weapon Skill (+1 THAC0). Now Kivan has a pair as well.
Brielbara's Daughter
After this I head south for a bit from the Blushing Mermaid. I then speak to a mage in red robes, Brielbara. She wants me to find Yago, in the hopes that she can end the curse that Yago put on her daughter.
Yago can be found on the third level of the Low Lantern, in the south section, and to the left. Yago will start right away with several spell protections in placing, including a Minor Globe of Invulnerability that can render Dispel Magic useless. I show a little trick here to get around this. First, I position Avastrian right next to Yago. I then start having Jaheira cast Dispel Magic before I even speak to him. Once her casting is close to completion, Avastrian then speaks to Yago to start the fight. If the timing is good, the Dispel Magic will wipe away his protections before his Minor Globe of Invulnerability has a chance to block it. After that, everyone stays on top of him with both up close and missile attacks.
Once he dies he leaves behind a Knave's Robe, and Yago's Book of Curses which Brielbara will want. His chest will have several spell scrolls.
I then head for the Splurging Sturgeon, which is towards the southwest corner of the northeast section of the city. When I step in, a woman named Lantara gives me an ominous message about a dream.
I then give Brielbara the Book of Curses for 1,000xp and +1 to reputation.
Lusselyn's Bet
Now that I'm in the Sturgeon I take the opportunity to speak with a drunken warrior named Lusselyn. The conversation ends with a bet as to whether or not I can kill a Mustard Jelly upstairs.
When I go upstairs I speak to Mr. Shade first, more for amusement's sake than anything else.
I then send Khalid, having the best armor class, on alone to kill the Mustard Jelly that is towards the northwest corner. I then speak to Lusselyn, but it turns out his bet was only good for 60gp.
Marek and Lothander
Now I enter the northeast section, but this time from the east section, so that I end up on the other side of the wall. I then talk to Marek, who makes a rather ominous threat.
I then head over to the tent pavilions in the central section. At some point, Marek's partner, Lothander, informs me that Marek has given me a slow acting poison. Lothander can provide information on how to obtain the antidote, but only if I help him by removing the Geas on him.
I make a start by visiting the Diviner in the nearby tent. The Diviner reveals that only Jalantha Mystmyr has the power to end the Geas. I inform Lothander of this, and he says he'll be waiting at the Blade and Stars Inn.
Now I head over to the Temple of Umberlee in the south section. Jalantha Mystmyr says she'll only remove the Geas if I get a Tome of Understanding from her. I then purchase the Tome of Insight from Chanthalas Ulbright in the Temple of Tymora in the west section.
I then return to the Temple of Umberlee, but I get a little underhanded here. I insist that Jalantha give me the scroll that will remove the Geas first. I then say that I don't have the Tome, which provokes Jalantha and the other Priestesses of Umberlee into attacking me. This fight is actually pretty easy if you sustain missile fire on any Priestess within sight so as to interrupt their spellcasting. The benefit of this is that Avastrian gets to use the Tome of Understanding to give himself a one-time permanent +1 increase to his Wisdom. There won't be any loss of reputation for this. Jalantha also leaves behind a Leather Armor +1.
I bring the scroll to Lothander, who is waiting in the Blade and Stars Inn in the southeast section of the city. He informs me that Marek can be found in the Blushing Mermaid tavern in the northeast section.
So I go up to the second level of the Blushing Mermaid, where Marek is waiting for me and starts to attack as soon as he sees me (in SCS now). He starts off with a few magical protections, but Imoen removes them easily with her Remove Magic spell. Once he's dead the party gets 10,000xp and no longer has to worry about the poison. Marek also leaves behind a Dagger +1 and the Eagle Bow (+2 Shortbow).
Now it's on to the northwest section of the city.
