MAZE OF DREAD, LEVEL 1
To the Maze of Dread
I visit the Sage in the southwest corner of the Wilderness, and for a 48,000gp fee he tells me that the Maze of Dread is home to a mercenary company known as the Graphnar Fist, and that the Maze itself is in the city of Thessalonica.
I make my way to Thessalonica, which is near the southeast corner of the Wilderness map.
The entrance to the Maze itself is at 14N 11E on the map of Thessalonica. If you have not been here previously, the correct answer to get inside is: "dread."
Yes Brown
The starting stairway itself is at a four-way cross roads. I first go through the north door, and win a series of extended fights against random monsters at 2N 0E, 3N 3E, 4N 5E, 4N 6E, 2N 3E, 2N 6E, 3N 7E, 3N 8E, 1N 3E, 1N 7E and 1N 9E. Note that in one instance I was much more willing to use Mangar's Mallet during a fight against numerous foes spread out over the 90' range. There will be an opportunity to replenish Spell Points.
I go back to the crossroad and then through the south door. I win fights against random monsters at 20N 0E and 21N 1E.
I go back to the crossroad and then through the east door. I win fights against random monsters at 0N 10E, 2N 11E and 2N 12E. The last square replenishes Spell Points, so now I sit on it until Talia and Mordred are fully recharged.
I go back to the crossroad and then through the west door. I win a fight against random monsters at 0N 16E. That square is also a teleporter, which takes me to 21N 15E.
From there I win fights against random monsters at 20N 15E, 19N 11E, 17N 11E, 17N 13E, 15N 13E, 17N 15?E and 13N 10E. Note how Mordred frequently uses Wand Segment three to blast a group of numerous enemies over and over again, while the front-line characters attack other monster groups. And of course, Ariel provides Spell Song as a primer.
A clue pertinent to obtaining the Sword of Zar is at 15N 10E, which reads: "Yes brown, as was the mighty crown."
*NOTE* I found a Kato's Bracer after the first fight, and I have another one I sold when I previously came to the Maze. At this point I frequently clear my inventory of excess hoping for a third. The reason why will be explained when I get to Oscon's Fortress.
Twas Blue
I win fight against random monsters at 13N 13E, 11N 11E, 7N 9E, 14N 7E, 13N 6E, 15N 3E, 17N 7E, 20N 9E, 18N 3E, 20N 4E and 20N 6E.
At 21N 6E is a clue that reads: "Twas blue, the one that never knew." I then win fights against random monsters at 19N 1E, 16N 1E and 16N 3E.
Not White
I make my way south and then east, winning fights against random monsters at 9N 6E, 7N 4E, 5N 3E, 7N 7E, 3N 11E, 3N 14E and 4N 13E along the way.
At 1N 12E is a clue that reads: "Not white while you can stand and fight."
As Yellow As
I win fights against random monsters at 5N 11 and 6N 13E. I also happen to get another Kato's Bracer after the first fight, so that is checked off for me.
At 5N 15E is a clue that reads: "As yellow as the great one's bellow."
Try Green
I win fights against random monsters at 7N 12E and 8N 16E. After the latter fight I get a clue that reads: "Try green, the one who lies unseen."
I thereafter win fights against random monsters at 8N 13E, 9N 13E, 8N 15E and 11E 15E.
As Black As
Now I win fights against random monsters at 3N 20E, 6N 21E and 7N 18E. I get a clue after the last fight that reads: "As black as coal foot's longest track."
After that, I win fights against random monsters at 11N 19E and 13N 17E. I go around west the long way to avoid the teleporter at 13N 16E.
I then win fights against random monsters at 12N 15E, 18N 19E, 19N 19E, 16N 19E and 13N 21E.
Elevator to the 2nd Level
I loop around to the other side and win fights against random monsters at 13N 1E, 12N 3E, 10N 3E, 9N 3E, 9N 1E and 7N 0E. Note how one of the fights involved several Kryll Mages and several Slaymakers, the latter of which were 90' distant. They would, given the opportunity, put up endless summons in front of you to block you reaching them. An easy way to deal with that if you want to rush the fight is to use the Melee Men spell on each group and pull them within reach of your front-line fighters.
I return to the stairs at the crossroads, go east, and sit on the Spell Point regenerating square at 2N 12E until Talia and Mordred are fully recharged.
Now I go west back to the stairs, but continue a little north and then a little west so as to win fights against random monsters at 2N 21E and 1N 21E.
At 1N 21E is an elevator that allows transport to any of three levels of the Maze. I choose to go to the second level.
