DRAGON'S EYE – LEVEL 3
To the Third Level of Dragon's Eye
First, I set up my 'Dragon's Eye Savegame'. Now I go downwards. I hit pause right away, before the Undead Lieutenant can start dialogue with me, so that Cassandra can start casting Entangle and Lanatir can start casting Web right away. The reason is that a LOT of Cold Wights, who can inflict extra cold damage with their physical attacks, are about to join in the attack. Again, crowd-control to hold the monsters in place is a reliable method for these sorts of mass attacks.
Once the battle is over, I quick-save. There's a container here that I want to cherry pick. It's a little north of Presio, the Necromancer I will soon kill. It has the following possibilities:
The ammunition is limited, and therefore those choices are out. There will be better slings for Halagrim, and same with when it comes to bows for the Black Thorn. Heavy Crossbow of Defense seems nice, but ... Crossbows usually only fire 1 bolt a round in comparison to 2 arrows from a bow. The tradeoff is that more potent ammunition is usually available for crossbows. With a Crossbow of Speed, you get the best of both worlds, being able to fire off more than one crossbow bolt per round. There will be an even better version of this kind of crossbow later in the game, but the Heavy Crossbow of Speed +4 will make for a good interim missile weapon for Derrick.
Now, once I quick-save after the battle, I have Derrick cast Invisibility on himself. He then walks all the way unnoticed to the container, and checks to see if it has the Heavy Crossbow of Speed +4. If it doesn't, I reload the 'Dragon's Eye' savegame. If it does, I reload the quicksave and go from there.
At the tail end of the video is another foe, the Blast Skeleton. It is a kamikaze type monster that tries to get close enough to explode and hit the party with a Snilloc's Snowball type of effect. But you can stop it cold in its tracks just by hitting it once with a missile weapon, causing it to explode harmlessly at a distance.
Undead Lieutenants and Cold Wights
There will be a few more packs of Cold Wights lead by Undead Lieutenants throughout this level. And the safe prescription remains the same, setting up crowd-control with Web + Entangle followed by Spike Growth and Fireball. *Note* Stinking Cloud won't work on undead.
You must be wary of traps however. I rest in between each fight. I then have Derrick cast Invisibility on the Black Thorn, who can then freely scope out for and then disarm any traps so that they're safely removed before I take on the next undead horde.
Presio
Eventually, I make my way to the southeast corner, where there's a circular building. Inside is the Necromancer, Presio. The approach is the same, plant Entangle, Web, and Spike Stones in the building. It won't catch all of the Poison Zombies and Imbued Wights, but it will hold still enough of them so that my warriors can chop down those that make it out. Lanatir of course nails the ones that are held still with repeated castings of Fireball.
The crowd-control spells will prevent Presio from casting spells, so she becomes an easy target for missile fire. She leaves behind:
A little north of where Presio was are some containers. There are 4 traps that need to be disarmed first. The two containers to the right will contain gold, gems, and spell scrolls for Vampiric Touch, Skull Trap, Haste, and Confusion. Lanatir scribes Confusion into his spellbook. There will also be Presio's War Journal for anyone who wants to read it. The one on the left has a couple scrolls, a couple of potions, as well as the Heavy Crossbow of Speed +4 that I set earlier. Derrick now has a good crossbow to fire his bolts with.
Northwards is the way to the next level, but there are a lot of traps in the way, so the Black Thorn takes his time to search for and disarm all of them.
The way is now clear to level 4.
