SEVERED HAND – LEVEL 3
Ilmater Holy Symbol
I go to one of the rooms on the south center. I open the door, where there are 2 Slayer Knights of Xvim on the other side. These fights are small-scale enough so that I don't want to do a full scale buff-up for them, but still dangerous enough that I shouldn't take it for granted. So I lure one out, and have Akutagawa kill him instantly with a Quivering Palm. I then lure the other one out, and Lady Elanna casts Executioner's Eyes so that the party can bring him down quickly.
Tithian disarms a trap at the door. A container in the room holds an Ilmater Holy Symbol. This is a quest item that will be used in a ritual later on.
There is another room just like this one to the west. I use the same method. I tease out one Slayer Knight so that Akutagawa can kill him instantly. I then bring down the other one quickly with the help of Executioner's Eyes.
Tithian again disarms a trap at the door. A container in the room holds spell scrolls for Iron Body, Black Blade of Disaster, and an Iyachtu Xvim Holy Symbol. This is also a quest item, and there's more than one. An objective for my party is for each party member to have one Iyachtu Xvim Holy Symbol in their inventory.
Yxbudur'znmutkimdu
On the west side of the level are several Devils led by a Gelugon, Cornugon, and a Red Abishai with really whacked names. A character with Diplomacy, and who doesn't have a particular thing against fiends like say a Paladin, can flaunt their knowledge of Baatezu hierarchy and convince them to leave on their own. It's more aggregate experience, though, to just kill them off. Lord Markus immediately announces his intention to send them back to the Hells. Physical combat, aided by buffs like Holy Aura, Remove Fear, Mass Haste, and Executioner's Eyes, suffice to win this battle.
Pool of Radiance
At the east of the level is the Pool of Radiance that is used by Isair and Madae to replenish their powers. It is very heavily guarded by a few Orog Priests and several Slayer Knights of Xvim. Slayer Knights, much more so than in Tactics, can deal out horrific damage with their two-handed swords.
I do some extra buffing up for this fight. This includes Alliria casting Barkskin on everybody besides Tithian and Lady Elanna. I also throw in Holy Aura, Emotion: Despair, and Mass Haste. Now I lure them forward.
The Slayer Knights prove how dangerous they are by scoring hefty damage on Lord Markus, even as buffed up as he is. Alliria waits until all of the Slayer Knights have closed in. One thing that Slayer Knights are not immune to is getting knocked down or knocked unconscious. Alliria's Tremor spell does a beautiful job of keeping them down and out of it for at least a couple of rounds. Lady Elanna immediately follows up with Executioner's Eyes. This way the warriors can make the most of the time they have to kill off and damage as many Slayer Knights as possible before they get back up. And indeed by the time the effects of the Tremor spell have worn off, only one Slayer Knight is alive to get up.
Alliria, Tithian, and Lady Elanna meanwhile, take out the Orog Priests with missile fire.
The party then examines the Pool of Radiance, but are unable to do anything with it for the time being.
Time to move on to the fourth floor.
