PALLEGINA, F AVIAN GODLIKE CHANTER / PALADIN

Pallegina

Stats

Abilities

1st Level - Sworn Enemy: One of her starting abilities. Her particular Paladin subclass has it so that Sworn Enemy does extra Burning Damage the first time it hits its target.

Blessed Was Wengridh, Quickest of his Tribe: One of her starting Chanter phrases. It adds +10 to Reflexes and a bonus to Stride as well. She ends up using different Phrases though.

Not Felled By the Axe, Nor Broken By the Storm: Another of her starting Chanter Invocations. Adds +4 to Slashing Armor and +4 to Shocking Armor. Can be useful for some fights, but in practice I tend to rely on other Armor buffs.

2nd Level - Lay on Hands: It provides +20 Health per 3 sec for 5 sec (which can be extended by Intellect), and will get an upgrade.

3rd Level - Deep Faith: In her case it will mean a +10 bonus to all of her Defenses.

4th Level - Weapon & Shield Style: Its +6 bonuses to both Deflection and Reflexes make it a natural choice for a secondary tank.

Zealous Endurance: She activates Zealous Endurance, and she'll soon upgrade that modal.

5th Level - Shatter Their Shackles, Cast Off Their Chains: Immunizes the party against Dexterity Afflictions. Can be really useful against enemies with Paralyzing attacks, like Spiders. For such fights, she can hit the whole party with this Invocation, and hit them again once she recoups her Phrases. That process can keep the party immune for the whole fight.

6th Level - Divine Purpose: I had earlier taken Gernisc Slew the Beast when I needed the Wurms summons during the earlier parts of the game. But once I have the Ogre summons through Oh But Knock Not on the Door of Urdel and Gurdel, I can replace the Wurm summons with Divine Purpose during a retrain. It will raise all her Defenses against Dexterity, Might and Resolve Attacks by +20. That will be a key benefit, as I often rely on her to use Invocations that will protect the rest of the party against those attacks.

7th Level - Ancient Memory: It recoups 1 Health every second. It may not sound like a big deal at first. But that 1 Health per second can become easily as much as 3 or even 4 health per second with enough raises in her Might and bonuses to her Healing. Having her Phrases modal run this constantly, and nothing else until the later stages of the game, is one of the foundations for the good party's approach of constantly and passively regenerating itself.

Greater Lay on Hands: It upgrades Lay on Hands so that it provides the Robust (+5 Constitution, +2 Armor Rating, regenerate Health every 3 sec) Inspiration for 8 seconds as well, subject to increasing the duration through higher Intellect. Lay on Hands will not only provide some initial healing to a single party member, it will also boost that party member's Armor Rating and Constitution. And the regeneration effect of Robust means even more healing in addition. That makes Greater Lay on Hands probably the best single-target heal in the game.

8th Level - Combat Focus: Some of her abilities, especially her summoning Invocations, have significant casting times. So taking this passive, which provides +1 Concentration at the start of each fight, is really helpful.

9th Level - Rejoice My Comrades! Two Fingers Of Daylight: It's a way to immunize the good party against Resolve Afflictions, especially Terrified, when needed. The Healing will also be augmented by Pallegina's bonuses to Might and Healing.

10th Level - Oh But Knock not on the Door of Urdel and Gurdel: It summons two Ogres. The Ogres hit hard but infrequently. But their real value is as meat shields with lots of Health that can hold up multiple enemies for the duration.

Exalted Endurance: It upgrades Zealous Endurance so that it also heals 3 Health (even more with increased Might and bonuses to Healing) every 3 seconds. It acts in concert with Ancient Memory and some of Pallegina's items to provide a powerful healing aura that allows the party to consistently and quickly regenerate from almost anything that hits them.

11th Level - Bull's Will: The +10 to Will stacks with bonuses to Defenses vs. Resolve Afflictions with Divine Purpose. And that's important so that she can use Rejoice My Comrades when faced with monsters capable of Resolve Afflictions.

12th Level - The Prisoners Turned On Their Captors: It upgrades Shatter Their Shackles so that it also adds the Strong (+5 Might) Inspiration in addition to the immunity to Dexterity Afflictions. The upgrade can increase the Damage and Healing provided by multiple party members, but can also protect against Might Afflictions like Stunned.

13th Level - Rapid Casting: It will help her cast her Chanter Invocations a little faster.

Practiced Healer: It will increase the Healing provided by abilities such as Ancient Memory and Exalted Endurance, as well as those provided by several of her items.

14th Level - Inspired Path: It increases her pool of Zeal that she can call on for purposes of using Greater Lay on Hands.

15th Level - ... And Evil Turned Away From The Sun: It upgrades Rejoice My Comrades! Two Fingers of Daylight! so that the two beams also inflict Burning Damage on enemies caught in their path. That Burning Damage is increased against Spirits and Vessels.

16th Level - ... For They Do Enjoy Stomping On Your Head: It upgrades Oh, but Knock not on the Door of Urdel and Gurdel so that the Ogres' attacks will now hit multiple enemies in an area-of-effect similar to Clear Out.

Valiant Triumph: It's a passive that has a 25% chance of recouping +1 Zeal whenever the Paladin who has it scores a killing blow. It's pretty much a no-brainer for any Paladin.

17th Level - Spell Resistance: It provides a 10% chance to outright avoid the effects of any hostile spell.

18th Level - Righteous Soul: It completely immunizies her against diseases and poisons, which can come in handy during some battles.

19th Level - Mercy and Kindness Followed Where'er She Followed: I set her up with a Phrase Modal that alternates between this phrase and Ancient Memory. It adds +50% Healing to all healing effects during its duration. That will include all of her passive healing auras, including Ancient Memory when both phrases overlap an account of Linger. It will also include Alliria's White Flames should she use it while the Phrase is active, as well as any other healing ability that's used during the duration. It takes passive healing as a foundation for the good party to a whole new level.

Stoic Steel: It increases her Armor Rating by +1 for each 6 sec that she remains in the same spot without moving, and to a maximum of +3. That will often come into play when she's in pitched battle with either a boss or numerous enemies. It ends temporarily should she move. As a passive it will stack with all of her other Armor Rating bonuses.

20th Level - Quick Summoning: It helps her summons her Ogres a little quicker when I need it.

Inventory

PalleginaMarux Amanth: Looted from a sarcophagus at #15 in the second level of the Engwithan Waystation. The Parrying Blade Modal of course allows her to add her own +10 active bonus to Deflection. Scoring a Hit with the weapon has a 10% chance of unleashing a Burning Damage attack called Corona of the Soul that harms only enemies in a small radius. One of the upgrades for Paladins will enhance Corona of the Soul so that it also provides Strong (+5 Might) and Smart (+5 Intellect) for the Paladin. The +5 Might will enhance her healing powers even more. The +5 Intellect will enhance the radius of her healing auras, and the duration of any buffs she provides like Shatter Their Shackles or Rejoice My Comrades!

Lethandria's Devotion: Purchased from an Imp at #2 in The Dark Cupboard, the entrance to which is at #3 in Periki's Overlook. The Block modal for Medium Shield provides a 30% chance to avoid any Weapon attack outright, which makes it worthwhile. The key point for Pallegina is that it heals 1 point of Health every 6 seconds. And that 1 point can be expanded through her bonuses to Healing and Might. It's another source of Healing that's in addition to what will be provided by her Ancient Memory Phrase and her Zealous Endurance Paladin Aura. I added the Lustrous Crystal enchantment, which costs two Sapphires but provides a 15% chance to outright avoid any Intellect Affliction. And I may rely on Pallegina to keep the rest of the party safe from Intellect Afflictions with the Set To Their Purpose, They All Knew Their Part Invocation. I also add the Sheltering Light enchantment, so that the passive Healing aura also adds +5 to all Defenses besides Deflection. And that in particular can help Aloth maintain his Defenses.

Cog of Cohh: Found in a hidden niche at #10 in Old City. I always want this kind of amulet, as its key perk is that the whole party enjoys a +5% bonus to Damage. Pallegina wears it in part because I have other amulets in mind for other characters. The other point is that she gains the Aware Inspiration (+5 Perception, 50% chance to convert Grazes to Hits) whenever an enemy is killed near her.

Three Trolls Stitched: Stolen from a chest in Iolfr's Raiments, the entrance to which is at #22 in Periki's Overlook. The +5 Health regenerated every 12 seconds will be increased by her bonuses to Healing and Might, and will be in addition to the other Healing abilities she keeps active. It helps improve her own personal resiliency, even with the penalties to Burning and Corrosive Armor Rating.

Blackened Plate Armor: Obtained after defeating Quartermaster Harka at #12 in the Sea-Lashed Crypt. The 50% reduction of Damage from Disease and Poison attacks is meaningless, since she has Righteous Soul. It provides one of Insightful (+5 Perception), Smart (+5 Intellect) or Steadfast (+5 Resolve) for at least 30 sec at the start of each combat. The real point is that I add the Life in Death enchantment, which provides yet another healing passive aura in addition to Ancient Memory and Exalted Endurance and Lethandria's Devotion. I also add Usher's Visage, which emits an aura that reduces the Armor Rating of all enemies within range by -1.

Gauntlets of Ogre Might: Purchased from the Well-Supplied Traveller at #5 in Port Maje. The +2 to Might will increase the Damage of her weapon attacks. But the real point is that it will increase the Healing provided by her numerous abilities, including Ancient Memory, Exalted Endurance, Lethandria's Devotion and later on the Blackened Plate Armor.

Chameleon's Touch: Obtained by defeating Nomu the Marauder at #7 on Neketaka Island. It provides +1 to an Attribute and +1 to a Skill depending on the class of the wearer. It's especially beneficial to multi-class characters, as having two classes will result in two bonuses to Attributes and two bonuses to Skills. For Pallegina it means +1 Intellect and +1 History as a Chanter, and +1 Might and +1 Diplomacy as a Paladin. The +1 to Might will increase the healing provided by several of her abilities, including Ancient Memory and Exalted Endurance. The +1 to Intellect will help expand the area-of-effect of those healing abilities.

Ring of Greater Regeneration: Purchased from the Orlan Peddler at #9 in the Brass Citadel. It heals 3 Health per 6 sec. And that 3 Health will get boosted by her bonuses to Might and to Healing. It helps to improve her own personal resiliency.

Physicker's Belt: Obtained from the Derelict Ship at #21 on the World Map while sailing the Southeast Deadfire. It will add a +2 bonus to her Alchemy skill, which she is already specializing in. The real point is the +10% bonus to Healing. That bonus will apply to all of her healing powers, including Lay on Hands, Ancient Memory, Exalted Endurance, as well as the healing provided by several of her items.

Footprints of Ahu Taka: Found in the Whenura Cleft at #4 on the Cleft Island. The +2 to Dexterity will help her Recover a little faster between actions, and that can help her use Lay on Hands or her Chanter Invocations a little sooner during tense situations. The +10% bonus to Heaing provides yet another bonus that will augment her passive healing auras such as Ancient Memory and Exalted Endurance among others.

Ways to Improve: If you want to design your own Watcher along the same lines, a Shieldbearer of St. Elcga would be the Paladin subclass of choice. It will bolster the Greater Lay of Hands so that the recipient is protected against being knocked unconscious for a brief duration, which may for example buy the recipient time to quaff a Potion of Healing. A Darcozzi Paladini might be an alternative if you want to be more offensively minded, as the recipient of Greater Lay on Hands will receive a Flame Shield effect.

The Troubadour would be the Chanter class of choice. Do not ever use Brisk Recitation in order for it to work. The reason being that if you leave Brisk Recitation inactive, then the linger of both Ancient Memory and Mercy and Kindness Followed Where'er She Followed will completely overlap. Mercy and Kindness Followed Where'er She Followed will bolster the healing provided Ancient Memory and other healing auras without ever truly lapsing.

Bellower is another possibility, since the bonus Power Levels would augment the Healing. The drawback is the reduced area-of-effect of the Chanter Phrases. You would need to either keep your party members packed tightly together so that they can benefit from the healing auras, or equip items that increase Intelligence or expand the area-of-effect (like Rings of Overseeing) to a workable level.

Other Multi-Class Possibilities: A more offensive Paladin / Chanter combination is possible. A Bleak Walker's +12% Corrosive Damage on using Flames of Devotion, Dragon's Dowry which is keyworded as making Fire attacks, the Ring of Focused Flame, and reduced reloading time from the Chanter keeping Sure-Handed Ila Nocked Her Arrow active can make for a potent ranged attack build.

A Paladin / Fighter, which is available for Pallegina, is one of the highest Defenses builds possible. It can combine Deep Faith and Divine Purpose and Inspiring Triumph from the Paladin with Determination and Vigorous Defense and the Conqueror Stance from the Fighter. The generic passives that raise Defenses, such as Bear's Fortitude, Bull's Will and Snake's Reflexes can be thrown in. A Shield and other items that raise Deflection like the Bracers of Greater Deflection and raise other Defenses like The Giftbearer's Cloth would be natural for the build as well. If any multi-class combination might actually make a Cipher's use of Defensive Mindweb workable, it might be this one (other than a Paladin / Wizard or a Fighter / Wizard). I admit I haven't tested it, and admit to being skeptical that it would be enough to keep the Mindweb going, at least during Path of the Damned.

If you're also wanting to emphasize high Armor Ratings for a Watcher Fighter / Paladin, then combining Unbroken as the Fighter subclass with Goldpact Knight as the Paladin subclass works. But you'd have to accept a penalty to Reflexes.
