UMAR HILLS
Minister Lloyd
Now I head over the Umar Hills, and listen in on the town hall discussion. Once it breaks up, I enter Minister Lloyd's home to the north east. I agree to try and find out what is behind the recent spate of disappearances.
Madulf
Now I leave the cabin and head northwards. I refuse Dibert's demand that I buy him swords and ale (which is important if you have the Ranger stronghold), and continue on. I find a group of monstrous humanoids led by an Ogre named Madulf. It turns out that they're not behind the killings, since they themselves have suffered some disappearances. I fall in with Madulf's request to try and secure a trade agreement with the townsfolk of Innesvale.
I then return to Minister Lloyd's cabin and relay Madulf's request. The Minister then leaves. I then head outside the cabin and rest up. I go back inside and get 27,500xp for facilitating the trade agreement, which in itself makes this route more beneficial than simply killing Madulf and his followers.
I go back north and get the Shield of the Lost +2 (+5% magic resistance) from Madulf. Jaheira and Anomen already have better though.
Daar and Collette
I then make my way to a smaller cabin that's a little west of Minister Lloyd's cabin. Standing outside is a man named Daar, who's despondent that a Wizard named Jermien is being an overly protective father who won't let Daar be with his daughter, Collette.
I go inside. Jermien isn't amenable to letting Daar be with Collette, but he does have a quest for me. He wants me to retrieve some Mimic's Blood.
I then travel in a northwest direction, and find a small cave at the foot of a rocky trail leading upwards. There's a chest in the cave. When I get close enough to the chest, the chest reveals itself as a Mimic. It has a sort of grease power that it can unleash on multiple party members, but I still kill it easily enough. I loot the chest for a Diamond and the Mimic's Blood.
I get 27,500xp, and Ilbratha (Shortsword +1, Mirror Image 1/day), for giving the Blood to Jermien. Minsc equips Ilbratha in his remaining weapon slot for the rest of Shadows of Amn. Note that even though he's not a Mage, he can still use the Mirror Image power just by having it in one of his weapon slots. This is quite useful for a character who's often in the thick of things, but with an otherwise lower armor class.
Jermien uses the Mimic's Blood to complete the Golem. Except the Golem goes berserk, forcing me to kill it. The dialogue leads to Jermien letting Daar and Collette be together, and I get another 19,250xp.
Merella's Cabin
Now I enter Merella's cabin, which is towards the southwest corner of the area. I search the cabin thoroughly. Between Marella's Journal and Mazzy's Note, this results in nearby ruins being revealed on the world map.
Chanelle
But first I briefly return to my Keep. To make it short, I decide to allow Chanelle the Maid her preference to marry Jessup instead of Malvolio, with a 500gp dowry to boot. This gets me 15,500xp.
Now I head for the Temple Ruins.
