DARK DOMAIN, LEVEL 2
Mangar Was Here
Note that there's a series of rooms running in a straight line west from the stairs. They all have set encounters against random monsters. I burn through all of them.
At 21N 3W is a message: "Mangar Was Here". I go back the way I came.
"The Tombs"
I go a little south, and then due west until I fight a bunch of random monsters at 19N 0E.
I go a little south and east to avoid the rooms that snuff out magic, or drain Hit Points or Spell Points. After that, I go into a large room that's filled with standalone doors on the west side of the level. I make my way to 13N 0E where a voice whispers that I should ask the wize one about "The Tombs".
I conclude by going through a door that loops around to the east side of the level, and brings me to 11N 21E.
Medusa
I go south one square and then west until I reach 10N 13E, where I encounter a Medusa, apparently the creature in darkness I was warned about. It can use Stone Touch, but I kill it right away. I leave the room and put my Cat Eyes spell back up.
Winged Creature
I go to 7N 12E, and then use Phase Door to get past the wall to the south and avoid the anti-magic square at 6N 13E at the same time.
At 5N 12E is a Winged Creature, who offers to join the party. I accept the offer, and indeed having it in the party is necessary to make progress in the fourth level of the Dark Domain. *NOTE* Actually, I'm willing to reload the acceptance until it has 80+ Hit Points so as to improve its survivability.
I continue west and past the spinner at 7N 2E until I loop around and reach the eastern edge of the level. I then change the party order so that the Winged Creature is in the fourth spot.
Monster Reformatory
There is a large room in the southeast corner of the level, which is called the "Monster Reformatory". Literally every square of the room, except the one at 0N 21E, has a set encounter against random monsters.
I do all of them. Note that with both Ybarra's Mystical Coat of Armor and Ariel's Traveller Tune, the Winged Creature is safe from physical attacks even when I face off against huge hordes of monsters here. The only real threat to him is damage from offensive spells, say from a Shock Sphere spell by a Dren. Even then, Ariel can heat it with Badhr Khilnfest if that happens.
I make my way to the corner at 0N 21E, and then cast a Phase Door spell to get through the wall to the south. I thereby loop around to 21N 21E.
After that, I cast Major Levitation and descend down the portal to reach the third level.
