MAZE OF DREAD
1st Elf Boots
Now I travel to Thessalonica, which is in the southeast corner of the wilderness map.
I start off at 8N 15E on the city map after coming in through the city gate. The entrance to the Maze of Dread is at 14N 11E. I have to speak the word "Dread" in answer in order to be able to enter.
I will not be engaging in a fully exploration of the Maze at this time. I will for now simply grind it for some more items that I want.
Note that there is a set fight against random monsters two squares north of the initial entry stairs, and another two squares 'south' (although looped around to actually be well north on the map). The process is simple, but it does require some explanation. First, I go two squares forward and win a fight. I turn around and go back to the stairs. After taking the stairs back up, I am given two options. One is to press E and end up in the city itself. Another is to press T and go back down the stairs. I press T and end up back in the Maze, but this time facing the same direction I had been when I had just prior taken the stairs up. So I can two squares forward for another fight, rinse and repeat the process as long as I need to.
*Note* dmc prefers a different grinding process, completing several fights against random monsters that are in the near vicinity before going up the stairs. I found my method very easy to use once I trained the key strokes as a matter of muscle memory. A matter of preference I guess ...
I repeat the process until I get a pair of Elf Boots. An identification by Roscue reveals that Elf Boots provide a luck bonus. That means better saving throws for anyone who wears them, and for characters who use magical attacks themselves, better chances of affecting enemy targets.
Any class can wear them. Mordred equips the first pair, but my ultimate plan is to have everyone in the party have their own pair. So the plan becomes apparent, grind the Maze with the process described above until I get seven pairs of Elf Boots.
Also, saving throw bonuses also provide better chances of running away from monster fights, which means an additional reason to simply replace any Speedboots I have with Elf Boots instead.
2nd Elf Boots
I repeat the process, and I get into a fight that includes a Milt. I am careful to never step into the waiting claws of a Demon Lord, and patiently wait until I can get within 70' of the Milt so that Gallard can give him the killing shot.
I get a second pair of Elf Boots. Talia equips them.
11th Level Archmages
I grind the Maze until I can advance Talia and Mordred to their eleventh levels. The new spell is The Brothers Kringle. It will summon as many Kringle Brothers as there are empty party slots. An individual Brother can inflict Critical Hits during physical attacks, and has a breath weapon.
3rd Elf Boots
I grind the Maze some more, and get a third pair of Elf Boots. Gallard equips them.
4th Elf Boots
More grinding leads to a fourth pair of Elf Boots. Cassandra equips them.
71st Level
More grinding leads to Lord Stygar, Zarathos, Ariel, Cassandra and Zarathos attaining their 71st levels of experience.
12th Level Archmages
I grind the Maze for plenty of fights, and Talia and Mordred reach their 12th levels as Archmages.
5th Elf Boots
More grinding of the Maze leads to a fifth pair of Elf Boots. Ariel equips them.
72nd Level
I do plenty more grinding, but no more Elf Boots for the time being. I do however raise Lord Stygar, Zarathos, Ariel, Cassandra and Zarathos to their 72nd levels of experience.
6th Elf Boots
I grind some more and get a sixth pair of Elf Boots. Zarathos equips them.
7th Elf Boots
I complete another cycle and get a third Breathring. Mordred equips it.
13th Level Archmages
I grind some more until everyone has enough xp to advance another level. Talia and Mordred advance to their 13th levels as Archmages. They also gain the most powerful offensive spell so far, Mangar's Mind Mallet, which does 200 to 800 points damage to all enemies at any range.
Lord Stygar, Zarathos, Ariel, Cassandra and Gallard advance to their 73rd level. My next destination is the Dark Domain in Tangramayne.
