SENIOR MAGE QUARTERS
Owain
I speak with Owain once I go up the stairs. He'll mention Niall's efforts to use the Litany of Adralla, which can prevent mind-control by Blood Magic. The pile of filth will have a random item. The other container has a Water Stained Portrait, which can be gifted to Sten.
Bel's Cache
I head south, and soon get into a fight against a trio of Blood Mages. Aldarion gets the jump on them with the Cone of Cold - Shock combo, making this an easy fight afterwards. I decide to kill their leader, as a roleplaying decision and for the xp.
A nearby container has the Rose of Orlais. I give both the Rose and the Wine I had purchased earlier to Wynne as gifts.
A little to the east will be Bel's Cache, which will hold a few magical grenades and/or potions. Note that you will need to have found the Maleficarum Regrets letter in Lothering first before you can find Bel's Cache.
Godwin
I go through the next couple of rooms engaging in routine fights against undead, and then a pair of Abominations. I find a mage named Godwyn, hiding in a closet. Remember this, because he's relevant to a quest in Orzammar IF you save the mages from the Pride Demon above, and side with First Enchanter Irving once the Pride Demon is defeated.
Creationist's Cord
I find a pair of Blood Mages and an Abomination in the next room. I demonstrate another tactical theme for this fight. Aldarion catches all three with the Cone of Cold. Wynne runs the mouse cursor over the enemies to find one that is at full health. She then immediately hits it with a Stone Fist spell, and Shatters it. Note that this tactic is more likely to work on a creature who is the same level as the party or less, as indicated by its name appearing in white letters instead of yellow or orange letters. For anyone who's interested, the Abomination leaves behind the Creationist's Cord (10% fire resistance, 10% to healing effects received).
The next room has another routine fight against two Abominations and a Rage Demon.
Cale Viazagat, First Corpsewalker
I travel to the next room. At several points throughout various locations in the game will be black vials that hold an undead creature known as a Revenant. The fallen statue in the room has the first such Black Vial. Simply taking the Vial is enough to break it and free the Revenant, which will promptly attack my party.
A Revenant is an incredibly powerful opponent in its own right. It can swing its sword in an arc, causing lots of damage to multiple nearby enemies. It can also use Telekinesis to pull opponents within melee range. To defeat a Revenant, it helps to have a healthy mix of 2 or 3 types of spells:
Irving's Study
The next room is Irving's Study. There are a couple of items here that are relevant to quests that I won't resolve until much later on. I am content for now to get a Codex Entry relevant to "Circles within Circles".
Now I go up to the Great Hall.
