Why He's Included
Sure, you need somebody to deal with the traps and locks, but you'd also like him to do a few other things as well. A single class Thief in 2nd ed. D&D can be pretty tough to swallow, unless a game offers specific advantages, like the funky possibilities with traps in BG2. So, combining Thief with something else in IWD seems natural. Normally, a Fighter/Thief may seem questionable, since they can't wear anything past leather armor. However, in IWD, there's a number of specific items available, like the Rogue's Cowl and the Shimmering Sash, that help make this build a bona fide front-line warrior. Since other characters will be using other weapons, he will by default be the one to use the Blade of Aihonen. He can also backstab after hiding in shadows or having Invisibility cast on him, and wreak havoc from afar with his bow.
