DARGOTH'S TOWER, LEVEL 5

Dargoth's Tower, Level 5

Number 9 Likes His Wine

I start off in a large dark room in the northeast corner. I go to 17N 20E, and then go south through the door, after which I have to fight some random monsters. I then have Lord Stygar use a charge from a Dayblade, since there's a LOT of anti-magic squares on this level.

At 15N 21E is another password clue. It reads: "Number 9 likes his favorite wine."

They Cannot Be Called Manly Men

The south side of the level is filled with an extensive network of hallways, filled with anti-magic squares, and with several traps along their breadth to boot. That means I can use neither Locate Traps nor Trap Zap for most of them. I therefore have Ariel switch over to Sanctuary Score, since it provides an AC bonus (not as much as Traveller's Tune) as well as a saving throw bonus against traps.

I do a sweep of the hallways, winning fights against random monsters at 9N 15E, 7N 16E, 11N 16E, 11N 18E, 10N 19E, 8N 19E, 10N 20E, 12N 20E, 13N 18E, 6N 14E, 2N 16E, 2N 18E, 0N 11E, 2N 5E, 2N 4E and )N 1E. Sometimes the traps still do enough damage (even petrification and death from a Basilisk Snare) that I have to leave the anti-magic hallway network altogether to cast the needed spells (e.g. Stone to Flesh, Beyond Death, Restoration) and then resume my progress.

I go back eastwards and to the complex of adjoined smaller rooms on the south-central portion of the level. I win fights against random monsters at 2N 7E, 4N 7E, 2N 10E, 4N 10E, 4N 11E, 4N 12E and 2N 12E. A clue at 3N 11E reads: "The last, you see, is number ten; they cannot be called manly men."

I thereafter win the fight against random monsters at 6N 9E, and then make my way out of the anti-magic side of the level altogether. Once I'm out, I put up a Batchspell and have Ariel switch back to Traveller's Tune.

Six We Know Will Try To Crow

I go west and around the Spell Point-draining squares. I hit a wall, with hallways starting either north or south. I follow the one that starts south. It becomes long and winding, and makes its way westwards. I also use Trap Zap for the numerous traps along its breadth. There is one fight against random monsters at 7N 11E.

At 14N 0E is another clue which reads: "Six we know will try to crow." I thereafter return to the fork near the northeast corner.

Dargoth

I go north through the hallway and finish it to its end as it turns west and joins a series of interconnected smaller rooms. I now win fights against random monsters at 21N 4E, 21N 2E, 20N 2E, 18N 3E, 18N 4E, 17N 4E, 17N 1E, 17N 0E, 18N 1E, 18N 2E, 19N 2E and 19N 1E.

At 20N 0E is Dargoth and four Centrons. I easily cut them down in physical combat.

Letter from Lagoth Zanta

Now I do an extended series of fights against random monsters in a sequence of 16N 2E, 15N 1E, 15N 0E, 15N 2E, 15N 4E, 17N 7E, 17N 6E, 18N 6E, 18N 7E, 17N 8E, 14N 6E, 12N 6E, 11N 5E, 9N 5E, 9N 6E, 8N 7E, 9N 9E and 8N 11E.

At 9N 11E is a letter whereby Lagoth Zanta was apparently proposing an alliance to Dargoth.

Reverse Tiny and Late

I win fights against random monsters at 9N 13E, 11N 13E, 14N 13E, 18N 12E, 18N 13E, 19N 13E, 20N 13E, 20N 12E, 20N 11E and 15N 10E.

A clue at 16N 12E reads: "For seven and eight reverse tiny and late."

Speak the Ten in Sequence

I win fights against random monsters at 12N 12E, 15N 9E, 16N 9E, 18N 9E and 20N 7E. I drop a few items from my inventory in anticipation of the Snare.

Now I go to the Magic Mouth at 12N 9E. The correct answers in order are:

I get teleported to 5N 20E to start the third Snare.

Snare #3

First I go to 7N 21E, where I defeat a pair of Web Dragons. The room itself offers a crucial clue, that hearing words of wisdom multiple times can truly give them worth.

Now I go east and loop around to 6N 6E. In fact, as the previous clue indicates, I come to this spot six times and get a different clue each time. The clues are as follows:

It is the third, fourth and fifth clues that have value. The fourth clue needs to be taken with a grain of salt. That is to say, it's only necessary to keep an inventory slot open to get an item you need.

Now I go to 3N 0E, where I hear a voice laughing. The laughing voice is the "joke" alluded to from the third clue. Now I S W W S E E S and E.

A statue asks me for the war cry. The answer is "havok" as per the fifth clue. I get a Dagger! in my inventory.

The teleporter at 1N 1E takes me to 5N 0E. I then go to 5N 18E. I am told to check the wall, which has given way to a door.

I go west through the door, whereupon Lagoth Zanta's voice has told me that I have succeeded. I also get Wand Segment 3 in my inventory.

I go north one square. I get into a fight that includes several Mag Mages. Problem is, they're just out of the reach of Gallard's Deadlyrang at 80', and will keep me blocked with summons if I let them. I solve that by using the Melee Men spell to pull them in range and hack them down.

I go north another square and use the Scry Sight spell to determine my location. I cast Apport Arcane with coordinates -7 -17 -4 to reach the stairs leaving the Tower.

91st Level

I go to Roscoe's, and have him identify the special feature on Wand Segment 3. It can cast Wizard's War without limit. Finally a segment that's actually useful. I have Mordred equip it.

I sell my excess equipment to Garth's, keeping the Master Key, the Wand Segments, as well as a Luckshield that I found during my extended trek through Dargoth's Tower. Gallard will soon undergo an inventory transition. I also sell the Harmonimum Staff, but I msy buy it back if I need it for the final battle.

Now I go to the Review Board. Lord Stygar, Ariel, Cassandra and Gallard advance to their 91st levels of experience. Zarathos advances to his 87th level. Talia and Mordred advance to their 51st levels as Archmages.

The Maze of Dread is next.
