LOTHERING CHANTRY
Doomsayer
Near the entrance to the Chantry is a Chasind Man driven mad by witnessing Darkspawn destruction first-hand, and who is engaging in some fear-mongering. You can convince him to leave or quiet down, either through shaming him, intimidating him, or calming him down. Whichever method you use, this will get you 100xp. I chose the calming down approach.
The bystanders then express their worries over the coming Darkspawn. If I were so inclined, I could scare them into giving me some money, which would get me another 100xp. But I declined to do so for roleplaying reasons.
Ser Bryant
I enter the Chantry and speak to Ser Bryant, who rewards me for driving off the bandits when I first arrived in Lothering. I also convince him to let me retrieve Health Poultices from a cabinet at the north end of the Chantry. The cabinet is also supposed to hold the Ancient Elven Boots (+1 Constitution). There is a well known bug whereby the Boots won't appear in the cabinet. If you want the Boots in the cabinet, check out this link.
A Fallen Templar
Now I go back to where I first entered Lothering, near where I killed the Bandits on the Road. There is a Templar lying dead. I pick up the Knight's Locket and the Knight's Note from the Templar's body.
I then return to the Chantry. A book that provides a Codex Entry for the First Blight and 50xp will be just a little east of Ser Bryant. A little north of the book will be Ser Donall. I engage in conversation, exploring all the possibilities I can with him. When I ask him what brought him to Lothering, that's when he mentions Ser Henric. That will also be my cue to give him the Locket and the Note. I get 100xp for this. I could also have gotten a gold crown off of him if I were so inclined.
Patter Gritch
Now I go back to the Dane's Refuge Inn. I make first contact with the Blackstone Irregulars, and accept one of their quests, Scraping the Barrel. This quest involves giving a notice of conscription to three individuals who have pledged their service in return for coin. One of them, Patter Gritch, is inside the Chantry in Lothering. He's next to the cabinet where I obtained the Ancient Elven Boots.
As much as possible I like to show the completion of side quests in their entirety within single videos, but in this instance there is no way around it. If I do not give Patter Gritch the notice now, he won't be available after Lothering gets destroyed, and I won't be able to complete this quest.
Bronze Symbol of Andraste
I then go to the northwest corner of the Chantry. There will be Codex Entries for The Adventures of the Black Fox from a book lying on the floor, as well as for the Sacred Ashes of Andraste from the bookcase. A locked chest has the Bronze Symbol of Andraste. Leliana appreciates gifts with themes that tie in with her newfound belief in the Maker and in Andraste, so I gift her with the Bronze Symbol. From this point onward, I avoid giving her any more gifts. The reason is that if I pump up Leliana's approval too high too fast, I may not be able to get the dialogues that trigger her personal/romantic quest involving a former mentor.
I leave the Chantry, and then pursue the sure-fire option to get the romance with Leliana started, the 'charming beautiful woman' dialogue option.
I then begin to pursue some quests offered at the Chanter's Board.
