Thayan Enclave
A Knot in the Weave, Part 1
I travel to Neverwinter again. There's a 'can't miss' building, the one with Gnoll Guards and a Golem in front of it. It's the Thayan Enclave.
I go inside, and a Gnoll merchant is immediately in view. He sells Bracers of Armor +1, a Cloak of Protection +1, and a Cloak of Resistance +1. He also sells a lot of low-level spell scrolls.
He also sells recipes that allow the addition of elemental resistances (i.e. +10 of any type) to armors and shields. I buy those up, but won't use them until later.
In a room to the left is a Red Wizard named Akila. He has a rather long quest for me, which I can get out of him with a successful Concentration or Spellcraft check. He wants more information on 'anomalies in the Weave' like the one that's in his very room. He gives me an Arcane Attenuator to facilitate my fieldwork on his behalf.
There's several such Arcane Nexuses on which I can use the Attenuator, and to which I've noted previously. I return to the Arcane Hosttower Outpost at #33 on the Overland Map. One such Nexus is on the second floor of the outpost. I use the Attenuator on it, and it gets replaced with a Charged Arcane Attenuator.
I bring the Charged Arcane Attenuator to Akila. He informs me that there's an experience scroll in one of the chests in the room (i.e. it will be the one that is now unlocked) and that his merchant will now have more goods for sale. Using the experience scroll results in a 1,000xp bonus. Akila also gives me another Arcane Attenuator, along with a mandate to find another Arcane Nexus.
The Gnoll merchant now has more spell scrolls for sale. I have Vandala buy scrolls of Fireball, Ice Storm, and Chain Lightning that are available, so that she has more offensive options available to her if she's so inclined.
The Gnoll merchant also sells recipes for Greater grenade-like weapons (e.g. Greater Alchemical Fire), and recipes for Deadly Weapon (+1d10 massive critical damage), Anarchic Weapon (+2d6 damage vs. lawful), and Axiomatic Weapon (+2d6 damage vs. chaotic).
A Knot in the Weave, Part 2
I find another Arcane Nexus in the Pirate Cove, at #29 on the Overland Map. I use the Arcane Attenuator, and bring the Charged Arcane Attenuator back to Akila for another experience scroll. I also get another Arcane Attenuator to use.
The Gnoll merchant now sells recipes for traps of a "Strong" tier, as well as Bracers of Armor +3.
A Knot in the Weave, Part 3
I find another Arcane Nexus in Parrum's Rock, at #21 on the Overland Map. I use the Arcane Attenuator, and bring the Charged Arcane Attenuator back to Akila for another experience scroll. I also get another Arcane Attenuator to use.
The Gnoll merchant at this point simply sells more spell scrolls. Vandala buys a few offensive spell scrolls for her possible use.
A Knot in the Weave, Part 4
I find another Arcane Nexus in the Banite Enclave, at #25 on the Overland Map. I use the Arcane Attenuator, and bring the Charged Arcane Attenuator back to Akila for another experience scroll. I also get another Arcane Attenuator to use.
The Gnoll merchant now also has the following items available:
He also begins to sell more spell scrolls, including those of 6th or 7th level. Vandala buys several scrolls, particularly offensive spells, for her possible use.
Incidentally, everyone in the party also gets the Research feat, which adds a +2 bonus to Spellcraft.
A Knot in the Weave, Part 5
I find another Arcane Nexus in the Burial Barrow, at #19 on the Overland Map. I use the Arcane Attenuator, and bring the Charged Arcane Attenuator back to Akila for another experience scroll. I also get another Arcane Attenuator to use.
The Gnoll merchant now also sells Bracers of Armor +6, and an Amulet of Will +3, plus another Stone of Alarm which I buy. He also sells more spell scrolls, including those of 8th level. I load up on more spell scrolls for Vandala, particularly ones for Mind Blank and Horrid Wilting.
The Gnoll merchant now also has the following recipes available:
Periapt of Wisdom +6
I return to the Merchant Headquarters in Crossroad Keep, and place myself near the workbenches. I craft a Periapt of Wisdom +6, which requires 18,000gp, a Beljuril gemstone, a unit of Cold Iron, and the Owl's Wisdom spell.
Umoja gets the Periapt. It will help all at once his attack bonus with his bow in conjunction with his Zen Archery feat, the number of spells he gets, and the saving throw DC of his offensive spells.
Belt of Agility +6
Now I also make two Belts of Agility +6, each of which requires 27,000gp, 3 Drider Silks, a Panther Pelt, and the Cat's Grace spell.
Finch gets one. The bonus to armor class can be handy in the even he gets caught out in the open. It will also provide bonuses to his Hide and Move Silently skill checks.
Gallard gets the other one, which is a no brainer. It improves all at once his thieving skill checks, his use of Evasion in conjunction with higher Reflex saving throws, his armor class, his Parry skill checks, and the attack bonus of his counterattacks in combination with the Weapon Finesse feat.
Boots of Striding +6
Now I take the portal back to the Lantanese Lumber Camp. Once there, I buy 12 Deinonychus Claws from Nil Leafrustle.
From there I make my way to Samargol, and enter the Shrine of Waukeen. I purchase two pairs of Hide Boots from the Cleric there.
I go out to the Bazaar. Incidentally, I forgot to purchase Gloves of the Minstrel (+3 Perform) for Finch beforehand, so now I take the opportunity to buy them from Vadin'ya.
After that, I enter the Crafting Stations. I craft two Boots of Striding +6, each of which requires a pair of Hide Boots, 27,000gp, six Dienonychus Claws, and a Bear's Endurance spell.
Vandala gets one pair. Boots of Hardiness, or the resources to make them, are comparatively rare, so I prefer to save those kinds of boots for characters who will spend more time on the front lines. Vandala prefers to hang back and pelt foes with Eldritch Chains. And besides, I'd rather she have a relatively higher Constitution bonus than what is provided by Boots of Hardiness. More Constitution means that she can make greater use of her Hellfire Warlock abilities during Overland Map random encounters.
Umoja gets the other pair, and for similar reasons. He usually hangs back and drills into the enemies with his bow at a distance.
A Knot in the Weave, Part 6
I need to find one more Arcane Nexus in order to full complete the Knot in the Weave quest. There are two more in the Sword Coast. One in the Forktongue Hideout and another in the Shadow Cult area. Problem is, both are not available until I take on quests that I plan to do later.
My return to Samarach in order to craft Boots of Striding has been convenient in the sense that it has brought me within reach of others that are in Samarach.
They are at:
I get 1,700xp for completing the entire quest, as well as the Master Researcher feat (+4 to Spellcraft) for everyone in the party. I also get another learning scroll in the last chest that allows me to add another 1,000xp.
The Gnoll Merchant now sells:
Now it's time to do some quests for Khelgar.
