CATACOMBS, LEVEL 3
99 Skeletons
I begin by changing my pre-buff song from Lucklaran to Traveller's Tune, as the fights here will tend to place relatively more emphasis on physical combat, the last fight in particular.
At 8N 5E is a fight against 99 Skeletons. As I'm nearing the end of my explorations of the Catacombs, and I've still got plenty of Spell Points to spare, I am now more willing to spend a few Spell Points to blow them away quickly with a Repel Dead spell.
53 Zombies
I make my way to 18N 14E, where I fight 53 Zombies. And again, now I'm willing to kill them off outright with a Repel Dead spell.
There's another fight against random monsters at 20N 16E. After I win, I get a message about seeking the Mad One's stony self in Harkyn's domain.
Another 99 Skeletons
Now I do the numerous fights against random monsters in the three corridors facing the southeast corner of the level. At 7N 17E is another fight against 99 Skeletons, and again I blow them away with a Repel Dead spell.
69 Wights
Now I complete the fights in the next two corridors to the west. At 13N 4E is a fight against 69 Wights, which I win easily after a Repel Dead spell.
36 Ghouls
I now complete the fights in the corridor that's fifth from the western edge of the level. At 3N 9E is a fight against 36 Ghouls, which I win in short order with a Repel Dead spell.
7 Wraiths
I complete the fights in the corridors near the southwest corner of the level. At 1N 0E is a fight against 7 Wraiths, which I finish by hacking them down one by one.
Catacombs Level 3, West Side
Notice that there's a whole bunch of fights against random monsters in little rooms clustered together on the west side. I complete all of them in order to rack up on the xp.
8 Wraiths
First, I do the fights against random monsters at 16N 1E, 18N 0E and then 21N 4E.
I next go to 21N 0E for a fight against 8 Wraiths. I win through straight physical combat. Once that is finished, I make my way to 18N 2E.
Catacombs Level 3, Northwest Side
Note that there's a spinner at 18N 6E. I do the fights against random monsters surrounding the spinner in a sequence of 17N 5E, 19N 5E, 21N 8E and 19N 7E.
After that, I complete other fights against random monsters in a sequence of 15N 8E, 10N 7E and 12N 8E.
66 Zombies
Now I complete the fights against random monsters at 15N 11E, 17N 11E and 18N 13E.
At 16N 13E is a fight against 16N 13E is a fight against 66 Zombies. I blow them away with a Repel Dead spell.
I make my way to the teleporter at 21N 15E, which takes me to 13N 17E.
King Aildrek
Now I go E E E N W W W N N N N E S S S E and N. I cast Trap Zap to the north to get rid of a couple of traps in the adjoining room. I go another square east and then cast Trap Zap to the north again to get rid of another trap. I then go N W N and E.
Waiting on the other side of the door to the north will be Witch King Aildrek, now a Spectre. A Spectre at his point is pretty much always going to strike first. Should it connect, there's two kinds of effects. One, the character is operating at effectively one level below what he or she was previously. Drained levels can become cumulative too. If the drained levels exceed the character's original level, that means the character's death. Drained levels can be healed by a Temple.
The second kind of effect is a permanent loss of 1,000xp. Suffice to say, you really want to minimize the number of times you get struck by undead who can inflict level-Drains.
In this instance, the party warriors' AC is actually good enough to have a real chance of avoiding the Spectre's attacks. That is owing to both Ariel having the Traveller's Tune already in place before the fight started, and my having grinded the second level of the Castle beforehand to get items like Ali's Carpets, Elf Cloaks and Adamant armor pieces. The Spectre misses an attack against Lord Stygar, and I am able to kill it immediately thereafter. It leaves behind an Eye, which I'll need to make progress.
I go one square north and one square west to take the teleporter. It brings me back to the stairs going back up to the second level, and I go up them to the second level. Now I use Apport Arcane with the following coordinates, -8 -11 1, to teleport to the stairs leading back out to the city.
37th Level
It is night time, so I enter the Adventurer's Guild and leave to reset the time to morning. I next sell my excess loot at Garth's.
Now I go to the Review Board. Talia and Mordred both advance three levels to reach their 29th levels as Wizards. Lord Stygar, Zarathos, Gallard, Ariel and Cassandra advance to their 37th levels of experience.
I go to Roscoe's, but first I put up Traveller's Tune, Ybarra's Mystical Coat of Armor, Cat Eyes, Major Levitation and Kiel's Magic Compass. I enter Roscoe's after that and have my Spell Points recharged.
Now I return to the Castle, for I intend to explore its third level.
