GNOME VILLAGE
Umber Hulks
Now I go down the well near the northwest corner of Lower Dorn's Deep, and run into a Deep Gnome named Ternhelm. I give him the Sack of Potatoes from the Palace Kitchen to earn his trust. He now wants me to kill some nearby Umber Hulks.
I go down towards the eastern part, and run into the occasional Rhinoceros Beetle. They aren't much trouble by themselves. They will leave behind a Rhino Beetle Shell. For anyone who's interested, a Rhino Beetle Shell can be crafted into a shield. The shield that you can have crafted from the Shell may not seem a big deal to dedicated warrior types. It is however a viable option for a single-class Druid. In essence, the available options allow a Druid to 'cheat' and use what can amount to a +3 Tower Shield or a +2 Tower Shield with a bonus to fire resistance.
Now I press on north and east, and several Umber Hulks burst out of the wall. As long as party members have good enough saving throws, you should be able to sustain your attacks on the Hulks such that the odd party member getting confused shouldn't be an overriding concern. Derrick chips in with a Slow spell.
Once the Hulks are gone, there will be 3 openings that provide entrances to the nearby Gnome village.
Beorn, Nym & Dirty Llew
Now I enter the village, and have to earn the trust of their leader, Beorn.
There will be a Drow merchant a little to the left named Nym. He'll sell potions, magical ammunition, and spell scrolls. I bought scrolls of Acid Storm, Mind Blank, and Prismatic Spray for Lanatir. He also sells a few unique items:
Staff of Moradin's Breath +2 (Resurrection with limited charges, Clerics only)
Nym also sells a Cage of Squirrels, and a Cage of Exotic Birds, which can be used to restore the Arboretum in the Severed Hand.
You can discover Nym started the feud long ago between the Dwarves of Dorn's Deep and the Elves of the Severed Hand if you press him about where he got his goods from. If you try to confront him about it, he'll simply disappear for good.
At the southeast corner is a Duergar Merchant named Dirty Llew. You can get lower prices if you get a female character to talk him, as well as an amusing dialogue. He also sells potions, but also the Umber Hulk Plate (armor class 2, +1 armor class bonus vs. slashing weapons). This is basically a plate armor that a single-class Druid can use. It can also be worn with a Cloak or Ring of Protection. But who says it has to be a Druid who wears it? As such, it becomes Halagrim's armor for the rest of the game, and part of his setup based on both good armor class and stacked damage resistance. He transfers his Plate Armor over to Cassandra.
If you want, you can also have Dirty Llew craft a shield from a Rhino Beetle Shield for you, which amounts to a non-magical Tower Shield. It will take him 3 days (after a Heart of Winter installation) to have the shield completed.
You are also supposed to have 2 options available for having it enchanted. One option is to have Nym enchant the shield, initially wanting a price of 30,000gp. If you complain, he'll offer to do it for 33,000gp and he'll throw in a Dagger +2. Refuse the Dagger, and he'll complete the shield for 28,000gp. The end product is Nym's Rhino Beetle Shield (armor class +3, +1 bonus armor class vs. missile weapons, +15% fire resistance).
The other option that was supposed to be available for this is to have Orrick enchant it instead, for Orrick's Rhino Beetle Shield (armor class +4, +1 bonus armor class vs. missile weapons). The dialogue for this option is apparently broken though. For anyone who wants it, the cheat code for it is "ORRSHLD".
I find Beorn at the north side of the village. His mission is for me to rescue a Gnome priest named Guello from the mines of Lower Dorn's Deep.
But first ...
Restoring the Arboretum
Now I return to the Arboretum, and give Valestis the Barrel of Pure Water, the Seeds, the Cage of Squirrels, and the Cage of Exotic Birds. I get an xp reward for each one.
Now I'm ready to explore the Mines.
