Video-Based Walkthrough for NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer
KAELYN, F NG HALF-CELESTIAL CLERIC 17
Kaelyn is one of those characters that can become really powerful by combining several features into one. She combines her Cleric spells with Paladin-like abilities, spell resistance that increases with each level, and the ability to summon a Planetar once each day. A very useful character to have along.
Stats
- Str 14
- Dex 16
- Con 16
- Int 12
- Wis 28
- Cha 18
- 20th level: +1 Wisdom - Wisdom is the primary stat for Clerics, so it certainly makes sense. Kaelyn sometimes does engage in offensive spellcasting.
- 24th level: +1 Wisdom - And so on.
- 28th level: +1 Wisdom - And so on.
Skills
Kaelyn emphasizes Concentration, Lore and Spellcraft.
She starts off by getting 7 skill points in Use Magic Device, even though she has to pay on a 2 for 1 basis. 7 skill points, plus her own Charisma bonus, plus a Cloak with a Charisma bonus of at least +6, plus adding another 2 points to Charisma during her level ups, will allow her to wear the (soon to be further enchanted) Boots of the Sun Soul +4 without a hitch.
After that, she plays catch up by emphasizing Spellcraft so that she can qualify for the epic spells.
Feats
Starting Feats:
- Power Attack
- Weapon Proficiency (Martial)
- Combat Casting
- Divine Might
- Strong Soul
- Extra Turning
18th level: Tower Shield Proficiency - The higher armor class is often worth investing a feat in Tower Shield Proficiency. In Kaelyn's case, I have her equip a specific tower shield that is found very early in the expansion, and also provides her with a Strength bonus.
21st level: Extend Spell - So that she can use spells like Stone Body and Battletide at twice their usual duration, in exchange for having to memorize such spells on spell-level higher. The price is more than worth it. It is also a prerequisite for the Persistent Spell feat.
23rd level:
Empower Spell - I won't really be able to take full advantage of this feat until Valeria gains enough influence with Kaelyn, whereupon it turns into the Improved Empower Spell feat. A key point here is that Kaelyn will then be able to cast an Empowered Fire Storm as a 9th level spell, which Clerics normally would be unable to do.
Persistent Spell - Allows Kaelyn to memorize a Persistent Prayer as a 9th level spell, and a Persistent Divine Favor as a 7th level spell.
25th level: Cleave - Kaelyn is usually at best a situational spellcaster, and by contrast performs as a front-line tank quite often. I therefore give her this feat to increase her number of attacks quite significantly. It will activate frequently due to her ability to land hefty damage with a Warhammer that packs multiple sources of elemental damage as well.
26th level: Great Cleave - This may trigger occasionally, depending on whether offensive spells have softened up the monsters beforehand or if Kaelyn manages to score triple-damage critical hits with her Warhammer.
27th level: Divine Shield - Now Kaelyn can add a dodge bonus to armor class that will stack with everything else that's equal to her Charisma bonus modifier. It will also last for as many rounds as her Charisma bonus modifier. Can really come in handy during particularly intense fights.
29th level: Damnation - A single-target instant death spell with a nice boost to saving throw DC. It also bypasses the Death Ward spell.
Great Charisma - Kaelyn will get a +9 to Charisma from her cloak, so it makes sense to take this and round out her Charisma to the next even number integer.
Inventory
- Primary Weapon: Fist of the North Star (Darksteel Warhammer +8, +2 magic damage, +5d6 cold damage, +5d6 electrical damage, 10% Blindness / 4 rounds DC=26) - When she uses her Divine Might power, the divine damage will stack with the bonus cold damage and bonus electrical damage. The reason I chose Warhammer is that it is probably the best blunt weapon that can be used with the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat. Kaelyn can cast the Weapon of Impact spell if she encounters foes who are subject to critical hits. The Blindness power will also work on critical-immune enemies.
- Shield: Sentinel of Helm (Tower Shield +8, -4 Intelligence, +4 to saving throws vs. mind-affecting, +6 Strength, +8 regeneration) - I found the Mage Protector tower shield in the Imaskari Forge. I raised the enhancement bonus to +8, and added +8 regeneration when I had the chance. The Intelligence penalty is meaningless for Kaelyn. Getting her Strength bonus from her tower shield gives her the flexibility to add a Fortitude saving throw bonus to her Girdle of Holy Might.
- Helmet: Chromatic Crown (+5 to saving throws vs. poison, +15 acid resistance, +15 cold resistance, +15 electrical resistance, +15 fire resistance) - Looted from Araman in the Founder's Sanctum. Elemental and poison resistances are always welcome for any character.
- Amulet of Divine Radiance (+5 natural bonus to armor class, +7 saving throws, +9 Wisdom, +40 fire resistance) - Looted an Amulet of Natural Armor +5 from Yulia in the Ice Troll Berserker Lodge. Added the +7 saving throws, +9 Wisdom, and +40 electrical resistance through enchantments afterwards. The +5 natural bonus to armor class and the +9 to Wisdom are the key features for Kaelyn, who acts as both a divine caster and a battle priest throughout the game. The +7 saving throws bonus and +40 fire resistance are sugar on top.
- Armor: Armor of Valor (Mithral Full Plate +8, +8 regeneration, +35 hit points) - I had Safiya forge a Mithral Full Plate. A +8 enhancement bonus, +8 regeneration, and +35 bonus hit points were added to the armor as well. As long as a character has a Dexterity of at least 16, which Kaelyn does, there is no armor that provides a better combination of base armor class and Dexterity bonus to armor class than Mithral Full Plate. The bonus hit points are sugar on top.
- Cloak: Legacy of Doom (+8 deflection bonus to armor class, immunity to level / ability drain, Finger of Death (13) 2/day, +9 Charisma) - I looted the Shroud of the Elder Doom from the Lich King in the Lower Level of the Death God's Vault. Immunity to death magic is the key benefit that the cloak comes with. Gann adds a +8 deflection bonus to armor class after, while Valeria uses Malleate Spirit to add +9 to Charisma. The +9 Charisma will mesh with Kaelyn's Charisma of 18 plus the extra point of Charisma she added during her 29th level up for a total of 28 Charisma. Higher Charisma will augment Kaelyn's use of abilities like Smite Evil, Divine Might, and Divine Shield.
- Gloves: Imaskari Bracers of Immortality (+8 Constitution, +2 regeneration) - Purchased from Omaga in the Nightshore. They become her source of Constitution bonus, while the regeneration bonus is sugar on top.
- 1st Ring: Binding Red Cord (+4 regeneration, +9 saving throws vs. acid, +9 saving throws vs. fire, +1 7th level Cleric spell) - I looted the Ring of Regeneration from the cabal of Vremyonni in Mulsantir. I added the saving throw bonuses and bonus Cleric spell afterwards. A bonus 7th level spell allows Kaelyn to add an extra Word of Faith spell or Extended Stone Body.
- 2nd Ring: Oni Ring (immunity to ability / level draining, +9 saving throws vs. cold, +9 saving throws vs. electricity, +1 6th level Cleric spell) - Imported the Bone Ring from the OC. I added the saving throw bonuses and bonus spell afterwards. The bonus spell allows Kaelyn to add another instance of Heal or Harm.
- Belt: Girdle of Holy Might (+1 5th level Cleric spell, +1 6th level Cleric spell, +1 7th level Cleric spell, +9 Fortitude saving throws, Clerics only) - I imported the Girdle of Holy Might from the OC, and added the Fortitude saving throw bonus afterwards. Bonus high-level spells is always a good thing for any spellcaster class, as is the bonus to Fortitude saving throws. It is getting my Strength bonus through the Mage Protector Tower Shield that allows this particular set up.
- Boots: Stairway to Heaven (+8 Dexterity, +4 dodge bonus to armor class, +9 Reflex saving throws) - Boots of the Sun Soul +4 were purchased from Azim in Mulsantir, and were further enchanted by Valeria. The increased Dexterity bonus and the dodge bonus to armor class certainly help Kaelyn's melee combat abilities. The Reflex saving throw bonus helps her to reduce damage from offensive spells, particularly in conjunction with elemental resistances provided by other items. She'll need a skill rank of 15 in Use Magic Device to be able to wear them.
