Why He's Included and How to Use Effectively
I used to use either a Fighter/Thief or a Fighter/Mage/Thief during my previous evil playthroughs because I didn't fully understand how to utilize Jan Jansen during BG2. But this meant having Jaheira in the party to provide Druidic spells. Let's just say that the shoe did not fit at all. Once I learned more about how to use Jan during BG2, and how Jan can help the party get through some of the toughest spots in the game, a different idea was born. Jaheira would have no place in an evil party. I would instead utilize one of the most powerful of BG2 character builds, a Cleric/Ranger.
Asteroth plays in a similar style to that of Avastrian. He dual wields blunt weapons, and can keep himself invulnerable from physical harm by using Armor of Faith and, later on, Iron Skins on himself. And indeed one of the perks of playing a Cleric/Ranger is using the Clerical spell progression table instead of the Druid spell progression table while still having access to Druid spells. He can also incorporate aspects of Jaheira's style, able to whip out Defensive Harmony when needed, or using an Insect Plague against enemy spellcasters. The trick to changing his alignment to Neutral Evil while still keeping all of his Cleric/Ranger abilities is to do only the Selfish test in Hell towards the end of Shadows of Amn the evil way, but do the rest of the tests the good way.
