Why He's Included and How to Use Effectively
He's the best pure arcane spellcaster in the party, and simply just plain better than the alternative evil Mage, Xzar.
Edwin's role is simple, to crank out the damaging spells on the monsters from afar. And he gets at least 2 bonus spells per spell level on account of his amulet. He can also use spells like Slow and Chaos that, while not as direct as Fireballs, are party friendly and yet still render the enemy monsters helpless. He can keep himself protected with spells like Stoneskin and Mirror Image when he has to.
An annoyance factor is involved with the setup for my evil party though. Edwin, as a Conjurer, can't use the Identify spell, and he's the only arcane spellcaster in my evil party. This means that I have to pay to have items identified. This can be a real pain in the arse, especially during the early going. Couple this with my deliberately keeping a low reputation, and my being able to purchase some of the choicer items in the game gets delayed. But in the long run it is well worth it to combine Edwin's sheer power with the likes of a Cleric/Ranger, Viconia, Montarion, Kagain, and Shar-Teel.
