THE CHANTRY IN DENERIM

Back Alley Justice

When I first arrive in Denerim, I complete a few quests for the Chantry as per their Chanter's Board. The first quest is Back Alley Justice. It involves travelling to three different back alleys shown on the Denerim map and clearing them of gangsters and thugs. The first area is the Dirty Alley. The thugs are waiting ahead of me near a gate. Wynne sets up an Earthquake, and then an Inferno-based Grease Fire behind the gate to take care of the Archers and anyone else caught by the Earthquake. Aldarion tosses in a Tempest for good measure. The party members take care of anyone that makes it through the gate.

The next area is the Dark Alley. There will be a lot of Thugs straight ahead. A few of them are Archers capable of Scattershot. More thugs will arrive from the right-hand side. Aldarion deactivates Combat Magic and switches over to his Wintersbreath staff. He then steps a little ahead to get things started. He starts off with a Blizzard. Wynne meanwhile sets up a multi-crowd control zone as follows: She carefully aims an Earthquake so that it cuts off as much of the approach to the party as possible but still catches the Archers on the elevated platform; she then aims a Grease to cut off approaches from both the front and the right-hand side; she then unleashes the Paralysis Explosion combo by planting a Glyph of Repulsion near the platform (and thus far from the party) followed by a Glyph of Paralysis right on top of it. This has the benefit of holding the Archers still for a while. Aldarion gets off a Tempest and completes the Storm of the Century combo. This pretty much wipes everyone out.

The last area is the Run Down Street. This time they'll be right in front of me. Wynne sets up a pre-emptive Grease right at their feet. Aldarion steps forward a little to start things. Wynne then unleashes a Fireball in order to start a Grease Fire. Wynne has to be ready for the ensuing aggro. This video shows how the Glyph of Repulsion can provide a wonderful defensive resource. She simply places it at her feet, and more often than not it forces back anyone who attacks her. Its duration is somewhat brief though and the attackers will still come, so Aldarion neutralizes the rest of the aggro with a Force Field on Wynne. It becomes a mop up after that. I then collect my reward from Chanter Rosamund.

Loghain's Push

Now I accept another quest, which is ostensibly to help out Teyrn Loghain's forces but really becomes an opportunity to undermine them. An area called "Civil War" will appear on the world map.

Once there, I get embroiled in a fight between the forces of Loghain and the forces of a local Bann. This battle is easy enough for me since I have a lot of help. I then report back to Chanter Rosamund for my reward.

Jowan's Intention

The next quest is to track down Aldarion's old friend, Jowan. Note that this quest is not normally available from the Chanter's board due to a bug. There is a fix for it at this link.
It is best to install it before you bring the ashes to heal Arl Eamon. Now that I've applied the fix beforehand, I accept the quest and an area simply called "Jowan" will appear on the world map. Once I travel there, I end up having to help Jowan and a few Refugees defends themselves first against a few Blight Wolves, and then against a pair of Bereskarns. The fight isn't difficult by now. Afterwards I have a roleplaying choice of either killing Jowan, or letting him go free. I chose the latter. Either way I can return to Chanter Rosamund for my reward.

There is one more Chantry quest, but it can't be completed until much later. For now, I do some quests for the Blackstone Irregulars.
