Boarding him shouldn't be too difficult, as most of his crew are lightly armored and can get cut down easily. The incentive to board him is that you'll get a Vailian Hullbreaker cannon, but only if you board him.
His long guns, (Imperial Long Guns and Iron Thunderers) are all meant for long range bombardment, so you may want to get in close if naval combat is your preference.
