The Crucible

The Rite of Passage

  1. This Quest can start in more than one way. It can start if you completed The Proving Quest through the Spectator Pathway by speaking to Humaire for the first time in The Crucible. It can also start after winning the fight against the Tyrant of Decay if you completed The Proving Quest through the Combatant Pathway. If you took the latter pathway, you can skip ahead to #3.
  2. Temple of Toamowhai

  3. If you took the Spectator Pathway, speak to Humaire near the Pool of Memories at #11 in the Temple of Toamowhai. She will want you to participate in arena combat in The Crucible. Your first challenge will be the Agony of Elements.

The fight will be against the Tyrant of Decay. Take out the four Obelisks that periodically summon Blights, and then gang up on the Tyrant.

  4. Now speak to Humaire at #11 in the Temple of Toamowhai. She explains her reasons for sending Muatu to plead for your help. The three faces of the Crucible (the Seeker Face, the Slayer Face, and the Survivor Face) used to conduct Crucible combat in a fair and reasonable manner. But they have become more bloodthirsty lately, forcing more and more combats that pit monstrosities against inexperienced beginners. She would like you to get to the bottom of things.

*NOTE* If you're interested in obtaining a powerful belt and maximizing its power, it is recommended that you speak to Neale at #5 immediately after having spoken to Humaire to start the Potions of Plenty Task. Starting it now is the reliable way of completing the Task.

But in the meantime, you still need to prove your worth by succeeding at the remaining challenges of the Rite of Passage.

  5. The next challenge will be the Trial of the Naga.

Several Naga will fight you in the arena. They also have totems hidden behind walls. One periodically summons a Drake, while the other periodically summons Bog Oozes. It is crucial to take out the totems before fighting the Naga themselves.

  6. You'll be brought back to #15 in the Temple of Toamowhai. A mercenary band led by an Orlan named Pipiltin will speak to you briefly before they take their own turn in the arena.

  7. Speak to Humaire at #11 Temple of Toamowhai. She'll indicate that your next challenge requires a blood sacrifice, and she'll give you a Ceremonial Knife. Draw a little of your own blood with it to get the Bloodied Ceremonial Knife.

  8. The next challenge is Memories of a Mad Man, which requires you to sacrifice the Bloodied Ceremonial Knife to the Pool of Memories.

The fight itself is against the spirit of Maerwald, along with five Soul Mirrors who are basically clones of your party members. Maerwald will himself be on the stage at the north end of the arena. The stairs on either side of the arena will be guarded. But the abilities of the guardians will vary depending on the decision you made about Maerwald's fate during Pillars of Eternity 1. They could be clones of Maerwald, or they could be Greater Flame Blights. Even so, you may want to take out Maerwald first and foremost since he's a powerful yet squishy Wizard. That same logic should also be applied to some of the Soul Mirrors, at least for those Soul Mirrors whose abilities emphasize damage instead of defensive tanking. Take out the ones that deal damage but are themselves squishy, like if they have two-handed weapons, and leave the defensive tanks with shields for last.

  9. PipiltinThe next challenge is The Bloodletting, which will be against Pipiltin and his party that includes a Mercenary Barbarian, a Mercenary Fighter, a Mercenary Monk and a Mercenary Rogue. This is actually the easiest of the fights in my opinion. He leaves behind The Maw of Ingimyrk.

  10. You now have choices about what to do with the soul essence accumulating in the arena:

    • You can attempt to send the souls back to the Wheel, but something will block that attempt.
    • Return the energy to the Crucible and the wildlife of Kazuwari. The Watcher gains a passive ability, Galawain's Gift (+2 Accuracy vs. Beasts).
    • Destroy the soul energy. The Watcher gains a passive ability, Rymrgand's Gift (+2 Accuracy vs. Vessels).
    • Channel it into Muatu, which is apparently supposed to make the summoning of Muatu's Head more powerful.
    • You can channel it into yourself to gain a Culmination Stone. You can use it to upgrade the enchantment of any armor, weapon or shield from Superb to Legendary.

  11. Now speak to Humaire to earn 8,700+ xp, the Crucible Token and complete the Quest. The next Quest, The Crucible, begins.
