The Task takes place entirely within Tikawara. A Mataru warrior named Mukumu will be interrogating a bound Roparu named Tamau over a missing piece of Koiki fruit that was needed for a local harvest ceremony. Tamau of course maintains his innocence. If you approach them without the fruit in hand, the conversation ends with Mukumu giving you the authority to investigate and find the missing fruit.
If you had obtained the Dried Koiki Fruit from the niche at #6 beforehand, Muzumu will become that much more convinced that Tamau is guilty. You can remain silent which results in Muzumu cutting Tamau down and letting him go to his punishment voluntarily. That concludes the Task with an xp reward. The other option is to insist on finding out who actually did steal the fruit to continue the Task.
Pekeho will be at #7. You can get him to admit that he provided false testimony against Tamau by:
Asking him to think of anything that could help you find the koiki fruit, followed by calling him on saying that it was for an offering when Mukuma actually planned to use it for a festival.
Asking him if he ever actually saw Tamau with the koiki fruit, followed by a Perception check of 17 that notices he's nervous.
A Bluff check of 4 followed by an Insight check of 3.
If he admits to false testimony, he'll also drop a hint that the thief likely used reed baskets to haul the fruit.
The Stained Kaora Reeds will be lying on the ground at #16. Right-click on them in the inventory screen, and then select the option to inspect them. Doing so will reveal that they are used to carry koiki fruit, as a clue to who the real thief is.
You can find Rongi either in his hut at #11, or near the trading post at #4 during the afternoon. There's three avenues you can pursue with him:
You can make an Insight check of 3, followed by either a dialogue option based on the Watcher being a Rogue or an Insight check of 5. This avenue won't convince him to confess though.
You can make him confess easily if you already found the Dried Koiki Fruit from the hidden niche at #6.
You can ask him about the Stained Kaora Reeds if you previously found them at #16. Follow ups based on a Bluff check of 7, or a combined Intimidate 8 and Intellect check of 14, will make him confess.
If he confesses, he'll desperately want you to keep his secret. Either the Benevolent or Stoic replies will assure him. The Clever reply will oblige him to give you 400cp as an intended bribe.
Alternatively, you can obtain Rongi's Journal from the chest in his hut. If the inhabitants catch you, you will lose moderate reputation with the Huana. If you want to read the Journal, you can go into Stealth mode outside the hut, enter the hut while still in Stealth mode, which should buy your Stealth character enough time to lift the Journal without being noticed.
Reading Rongi's Journal indicates that he often goes out to the beach at midnight. You can Wait or Rest until midnight, and then go to #6. You can:
Pick up the Dried Koiki Fruit from the hidden niche first, which will make getting a confession from him pretty easy.
Make a Bluff check of 4.
Make an Intimidate check of 5.
A dialogue option for getting him to confess also becomes available if your Watcher character is a Ranger.
Any of these will get him to confess. And he likewise pleads with the party to keep his secret, and your options will be the same as if you had confronted him inside of his hut.
*NOTE* The Dried Koiki Fruit will be much easier to find at #6 after Rongi admits to his theft. Finding it beforehand would otherwise require higher character levels or a pretty significant Perception (i.e., 17 or so).
Now speak to Mukumu with the Dried Koiki Fruit in hand. It's up to you whether it's Tamau or Rongi who receives a death sentence from Mukumu. It you let Tamau take the blame, his corpse will appear face up in the water near the docks. If you revealed that it was Rongi, his corpse will appear face down in the water near the docks.
Whatever choice you make, you receive a major boost in reputation with Tikawara, an xp reward, 100cp and three Potions of Deftness.
